I remember there was a big hype from Microsoft about Vista before it came out. Still, I've seen articles about how it's actually slower than XP and not a real difference in stability.

Not to say, "Vista's evil! Get XP!", but I am curious:

What are the advantages of Vista over XP?

Also, what are the disadvantages of Vista?

Vista is Microsoft's new operating system, and XP is "Windows XP" (the one that came out before it). Which I'm sure most people know, but I hate it when others make esoteric posts without explaining, so just for completeness's sake. :P

It can restart drivers and software when they stop responding..with out need of a restart
-Eye candy
-the future
-out of the box support for new toys/drivers
-build in windows vista media center
-it can look like XP if you want :P
-can shut down hardware to safe energy

And not slow anymore with SP1
(talking about Vista Ultimate btw)

negative;
-driver support for older printers
-needs a faster pc (although it shuts down options if it is a slower pc). But if you buy a new pc...go for Vista
-XP SP3 is comming

SP means service pack; a collection of improvements and patches. XP gets version 3 and Vista it first one.
You can download these or Microsoft send them

As a software pro I have to say the Vista isn't something I'd upgrade to. On new hardware it is ok, as long as you're buying new printers, scanners etc., but on older systems its just too likely to not have the drivers for your printers/video card/whatever.

Vista SP1 is, as usual, a major step forward, I remember having roughly this discussion about XP versus 2K back in the day before XP SP1.

I'd guess Vista will be replaced rather quickly since its reception has been roughly the same ME got for roughly the same reasons.

I've had it for about a week on the new Dell laptop; am running XP on another Dell laptop.

My first positive impressions are:

- The Start menu makes more sense than XP's
- The graphics are outstanding

Haven't used it long enough to say what's bad because most of my displeasure I can still only chalk up to new-user disorientation. I'm mildly irritated that it requires 2 GB of RAM and at least a 1.8 ghz duo processor. That added to the cost of the machine a bit.

ETA: I'm running Vista Home Premium.

But maybe I believed the M$ hype at how wonderful it would be and so expect more than is fair. Or maybe it is me, and I am just not used to it yet.

It is slower than I thought, honestly my win 98 machine moves quicker at times, this I am surprised at.

Well, I am on the Vista basic and it being basic might very well be basic in that I might not be due the good bits that were the hype.

Also, it has not been on line for about six weeks, so no updates, maybe it is that. With hope, I will get it on line later tonight and then see.

The pc is a HP 530, my first lappy, dual centrino with 1gb ram and I think 140 gb hdd, thats 14 times bigger than my win 98 machine, with 850mb more ram running an old celeron processor, yet it moves quicker when it first starts up, something I do not quite understand.

I like the way it puts a yellowy tint on all the images I view, I think it is preparing me for old age.

It is a well known fact the older you get the more yellowy your vision becomes but Vista is doing it for me sooner.

Shiny can be somewhat blinding in the wrong lighting.

I own way too many computers, most of them are XP, only one is Vista. Vista sucks. It is slower, even after turning off the unnecessary junk Microsoft loads on for our own "protection".
You need at least 2g of ram to move faster than a turtle. I repartitioned my drive and loaded XP on the other side for when I want to be more productive.
On a related note, when XP came out in 2000, that was all you could buy. They didn't offer any preloaded systems without xp unless you bought the software.
But I noticed in the last month or so that most of the major retailer's now offer Vista computers AND along side them, they have XP systems.
Boy.. is that a telling argument against the vista system or what?

yes the follow up is already presented...alpha versions released. Think it will be released in 2010.
COmparing it with ME is partly ok..although Vista is functional..and ME was really a testground to build XP.
But is also the reason that SP3 for Xp will be there....it was not planned before (well was canceled)

lol yes.. a lot of pc builders sold their pc with the "vista ready" logo. Well it propably will work...just damn slow..lol

The first beat which I tested of vista ..was damn slow...now I test SP1 and I am happy....
Propably also depends on what software you run and such.

Microsoft tech site says that service pack 1 for Vista will be out soon. You can find the beta online now. I find it interesting that it was a good 2 yrs before they incorporated sp1 onto the XP and sp2, slightly less than 2 yrs later. And here is Vista, already set to have their own SP1 so quickly.
Makes me think their push to this new more secure system, isn't as secure as they thought.

Vista is the most secure system with the least patches released right now. (can't find the source right now)
SP1 is mainly a speedupdate and soem bugss......but secure it is.

I got stuck with it when I had to get a new system about 10 months ago.
I hate it.

I run XP on my desktop, whch is where I do most of my music and video editing, and Vista on my laptop, where I do most of my writing.

Day to day I don't notice much difference, although I have been unable to transfer some of the applications from XP to Vista because it doesn't support them - most frustratingly my Adobe pdf creator, which means that I have to take my Word files from my laptop to my desktop if I want to make them into a pdf.

My two penneth.

Not sure if it is any help, but have you tried the free download; openoffice .org, an open source program nearly as good as MS office, better in that it is free to start with.

I got my Vista machine working now, my connection problem was because for whatever reason my lappy did not detect the DNS settings. All the updates have been performed, and now it is faster than my old win 98 machine.

So far, since getting my vista machine on line on my own broadband connection, I am happy with it.

Depends on the context.

From Microsoft's Point of View, if they don't provide the appearance of progress in keeping their O/S and Application offerings current, they're toast.

From the USER'S point of view. Vista is the Poor-Man's-OS-X. There's no *reason* to upgrade unless you're ashamed of the Fisher-Price User Interface on XP.

From the Corporate IT Point of View. Vista is nothing but a fucking headache.

I think a *lot* of people finally understand. *ALL* Microsoft brings to the table is Marketing, Smoke and Mirrors.

Remember when they used to say, 'Driver support' as a point in Microsoft Windows favor?

Linux blows Windows away with hardware driver support.
