Status: offline 		How many people here found out the scene through these two magazines? I knew about it before, but when I came across the stories in my teens, they excited and turned me on then, but now they are a bit contrived. Still, it opened the door for me. Anyone else?

Status: offline 		I didn't find out about it via Penthouse Forum or Variations... I didn't even find out about those magazines until I'd moved out on my own, a good 5 years after becoming sexual. But, they are often good wanking material. And to give the digests some credit, they have run some articles by Pat Califia, and others who are in the scene, at times.

I just wish to hell the men's magazines would grow the hell up. There was a glimmer of hope there for awhile, with both "Future Sex" and "Sex Life," but neither lasted more than a dozen issues. Is "Equus Eroticus" still being printed?

Status: offline 		   I Already knew about BDSM, but I was young and had very little experience in the lifestyle. I found "Variations" interesting. I never thought much of "Forum."
I actually have a collection of "Variations" that goes back to the 80's. The articles and letters were better back then, even if they were fake. I found them entertaining, and I'll even admit it...arousing. Then again, I was (*cough *cough) a bit younger and less experienced.
I haven't bought an issue in a few years now. I might have to go buy one and check it out...Just for "shits and giggles," as they say.

Status: offline 		I loved Forum when I was younger ( I actually hid them from my husband- he did not approve of porn in the house [Maxim was as racy as he would get]), but had never heard of Variations. I've now read some Master's old Variations and I sure wish I had come upon it long ago- it would have saved me years of wondering about myself. (But, as Master says, all our lives lead us to where we are now, and I would not change that. )

Status: offline 		hejira, there's always ebay. I've bought back issue lots there for pennies on the dollar. (Usually, it's the shipping that's the worst of it.) But I've picked up a lot of great issues of Penthouse, Playboy, Oui and Skin II there for next to nothing.

Over here in the UK Forum magazine, a title formerly leased from Penthouse but independently edited introduced a couple of generations of kinksters here. It wobbled a bit when the then leaseholder declined to renew and Penthouse tried to turn it into a soft-porn mag, but the old team are now back in charge. It remains the only really kink-orientated 'reader' mag savailable throughout the UK. Highly recommended.

Equuus Eroticus is still staggering on, now on #22, available from me, amongst others ...

But scene magazines  are dying out, as mainstream obnes are over time, the internety is killing them and sensible editors are using them more as a vehicle to boost thew website, rather than the other way around.
