I'm seriously at a loss as to how to even respond to this kind of thing.

This man was illegally practising as an obstetrician. Sick fucks abound, unfortunately.

Why would a woman allow a gyno to remove a breast?  Wouldn't you go to a surgeon for that?  Weird.

It's Fox News, so half of the article is probably completely inaccurate anyway, but it's quite common for obstetricians (gynaecologists who have trained to practice obstetrics, such as caesarian sections) to practice minor operations of a gynaecological kind (ie. on women).

Don't know how they train down under. But you are right that for something as major as a mastectomy, you'd think a surgeon would operate...

PS: the Medical Board is guilty of overlooking the fact this man was a dangerous nut, and after the first complaint made against him, he should have been struck off the board completely and banned from practicing medicine altogether. But Medical Boards often worry about salvaging their reputations before taking into account patients' safety.

PPS: just realised that 'down under' wasn't the best choice of words for talking about Australia, in this particular instance...

Medical referrals also work differently in Australia than they do here in the states. I went to school in Australia (Victoria, not New South Wales where this happened though) and you have to be referred to a surgeon then get assigned a placement level before you get your surgery. I have a friend who's been at a level 3 for over a year when she should have been a 2. The higher you are, the sooner you get your surgery. This is beyond horrific to me. This "man's" bits should be taken off slowly, bit by bit, to see how he likes it. And told he'll never need them again. Sick bastard doesn't even begin to describe him...

Presumably, there is a national register where people can check a nurse's/doctor's/surgeon's/dentist's credentials/licence to practice, etc ? So that begs the question, if one of those professionals incur a suspension, will that also show up should a person run such a check? Either way, the last comment on that link regarding the medical board seems pretty accurate. Anyone practising while suspended is commiting a felony, surely?

This is why you should look to see if your doc or surgeon is certified and if you have doubts or antsy it is public record any lawsuits they have had or pending against them.  Here is a site in the US that will show if they are certified.

Yes, but does it also show those who are on suspension, sweetnurse? I somehow doubt it and it SHOULD, people need to be better informed regarding those to whom they are entrusting their wellbeing.

As I said it is public record in the county they practice any lawsuits pending or past.  This will help too. Anyone can look it up. You can go to the library and look it up. Most people don't know that. So that is why I said it.

There are also medical boards in every state. They can give you a list of things against any doctor certified in that state.  People need to take control of their own healthcare and not rely on anything a doctor or surgeon says as the gospel.  Some states have better info on the net than others. Always call your state medical board when in doubt.

A mini hi jack...I think its also prudent to inquire about a hospital's rate of infection when having surgery.

Y'know, the OP said they had trouble figuring out even how to respond to that. IT took me some time, but here goes.

If I am driving a car, there is a certain level of cometence required. If I turn the wheel at the wrong time and run you over I might be held criminally liable for it.

If I am a surgeon and am to remove part of a labia for what should be a good reason, if the knife slips and I cut the clit off, I see that as actionable. Tort law in this country is such that one of the biggest expenses doctors now hve is malpractice insurance.

And that is for an accident. This was on purpose. The guy belongs in jail.

Why aren't these people held to at least the same standards as the rest of us ? Maybe this guy need his "fun parts" removed surgically eh ?

Don't surgeries like that (the original intent) require someone else there? I'm left wondering if someone else was there and didn't speak up at the time or afterwards til the woman stepped forward. That's an awful awful thing to do to someone and I admit that thoughts of mutilation as retaliation are in my head.

Thank you for that information as I am going to place this on my favorites.  To think someone who did that really enrages me to mutilate a female's body and that there was a death.  This man should NEVER practice medicine again and serve quite a few years in prison!!

a dear friend of mine just came home from her father's funeral.  he was at the cleveland clinic for heart surgery.  he came through the surgery just fine and got a post operative infection in the cardiac care unit, which was recently remodelled to be one large open ward rather than separate rooms.  MERSA and sepsis were what killed him.   he was actually recovering from the stent being put in.

In *some* African and Middle Eastern countries, not all. Many of said countries would not dream of the mutilation of female genitalia. This custom is these *some* countries dates back millenia. Is it right? To us, no it absolutely is not right though that doesn't mean that we can get all tribes/countries to stop it.  Parts of India still throw newly born females off cliffs to kill them as being female they are not considered to have the ability to 'work' and assist in providing for the family. Horrible things happen all over the world and here in the US. However, in Western countries and many non-Western countries we do have the means to be looking into who is providing our health care as well as the records of hospitals for things such as their nosocomial infection rates.

All states in the US have physician registries and I do know that many show suspensions and such along with pending litigation. We ultimately hire these people, they work for us. We need to learn to check their references as we would anyone that we'd employ for any sort of work. Hell we seem to check out nannies a whole lot closer than we do our healthcare providers. Most states also hold this information on nurses, nurse practitioners, medical assistants and in many states, CNAs. Any sort of medical work which requires a certificate is most likely on a state registry for that profession. Maine does hold a CNA registry where information can be found.  Having been a medical professional since 1984, I have insisted to more than one patient to go to the state registry whenever in doubt regarding anything. You are a consumer of health care so why not be as thorough with that as you are when purchasing a car?

I am saddened to say that this incident does not surprise me. I hate to think of the actual number of people practicing health care who are uneducated, unlicensed and unqualified. I surmise that the number would stagger most of us. As to a gyn performing surgery, most are highly trained surgeons usually doing female reproductive surgery. This is a highly vascular and small area for surgery and requires a great amount of training and skill which most actual gynocologists possess. This is especially true of ob gyns and specialist reproductive gyns. They aren't known in great numbers though to be performing breast surgery.

What KILLS me is that its TOTALLY preventable. If the law would just step up....but there seems to be a "wall of silence" when it comes to medical mistakes and quackery.
