I have to start out with tea in the morning and only after several cuppas can I switch to coffee. I still drink tea throughout the day. Still call the monsters to "tea" at night rather than dinner... Fill up with "petrol" rather than gas. Things like that. They're used to it - they know mum went to school overseas and isn't your typical Yank "mom".

hehe, yeah.... when i've gone home for visits, i have to constantly translate, i think so much in 'strine these days. cardies, petrol, bikkies, postie, etc etc etc funny how some things stick though, i still call it dinner, i've learned just to say cuppa stead of coffee or tea, i can't translate miles to km's... just little stuff, but it makes you and others aware you're not native it's funny, with a new job, and seeing lots of new people, i've gone back to explaining where i'm from, lol! last night at a function for work, i swear every new person i met, the 2nd thing they asked was - was i irish, scottish, etc etc. it's a good icebreaker.
