Well, I like to use it as a handy reference because most figures can be rounded or more easily divided into. For Fahrenheit to Celcius conversion I usually cheat, since it only comes up for me periodically; but the "easy" method for me is to subtract 32, multiply by 5, divide by 9. Usually with that formula I can easily break the figure down in my head within a reasonable time. Like that whole -40 = -40 thing: -40-32 = -72; x5 is 360; /9 is 40. Depends on how well you get along with mathematics, I suppose. I do math almost as well as writing, and I'm not above shortcuts in either!
