carlie310 -> Earthquake in England? (2/26/2008 7:40:24 PM)

The news here just reported an earthquake in England--4.7.  (I have no frame of reference for that, so I don't know how that compares to anything.)

I know a good number of y'all are on the sceptered isle. . .did the earth move for you?  That's only a joke if everyone is fine, otherwise it's genuine concern.

I was talking to my friend in England when it happened hehe

NorthernGent -> RE: Earthquake in England? (2/26/2008 7:46:14 PM)

As it happens, it woke me up about 1 in the morning.

'A typically low-key English affair, really. No deaths, no drama, no pulling bodies out of rubble...........just a quick tremor, a cup of tea and back to sleep.

where in England was it centered/felt?

carlie310 -> RE: Earthquake in England? (2/26/2008 7:57:25 PM)

FR--York.

Sorry, that would have been nice to include.  http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/europe/02/26/uk.earthquake/index.html

The link is more fleshed-out than when I first looked at it, and they have the information that 4.0-4.9 is considered light.  It seems to me if you aren't living in a quake prone area, it can still rock your world.  When I visited Charleston SC, I was amazed at the earthquake bolts that held the city's older buildings together.

       Certainly enough to hold your attention if you notice it.

Details from USGS are here

Lincoln I think, which is over the other side of the country. It'll be the talk of the village in the morning, "eee flower, that earthquake last night......."

GreedyTop -> RE: Earthquake in England? (2/26/2008 8:10:36 PM)

ok, since my knowledge of geography is rather.. shaky (pardon the pun) at best, how far was the epicenter from the Manchester/Birmingham areas?

carlie310 -> RE: Earthquake in England? (2/26/2008 8:15:23 PM)

There is no forgiveness for poor punning.

As far as the location, don't ask me, I've never been there.

You can ask Prof. Google, though:

       There may have been minor tragedies involving tea-cups.

Sanity -> RE: Earthquake in England? (2/26/2008 8:32:43 PM)

Boise was shakin' last week, from the 6.0 magnitude quake in Sparks, Nevada that rearranged a lot of brick buildings down that way. There's supposed to be a new volcano building itself near Sisters, Oregon, and was it two weeks ago we were discussing all the quakes on the California / Mexico border?

Interesting times

GreedyTop -> RE: Earthquake in England? (2/26/2008 9:38:48 PM)

thanks, carlie!

TheHeretic -> RE: Earthquake in England? (2/26/2008 10:18:37 PM)

       What are you suggesting, Sanity?  You don't suppose it might be (cue dramatic music) Global warming???

luckydog1 -> RE: Earthquake in England? (2/26/2008 11:02:42 PM)

Heretic, the massive glacier melting is taking a huge amount of wieght off of several plates, which is causing effects throughout the plate/fault system of the entire world.  Greenland is near England and directly messing with its fault lines.  You bet this can be blamed on Global warming.

RCdc -> RE: Earthquake in England? (2/27/2008 12:36:53 AM)

A very British Earthquake.

5.2 on the scale, felt as far away as Amsterdam, lots of tea for everyone and I am sure the earth moved for most.[;)]

The weirdest thing for me, wasn't the eathquake, but the birds.  Dawn chorus at 1am in the morning was a really unsettling feeling and put my body clock right out.

I slept right through it. Guess that could be as a result of her having a cold and shaking the bed with coughing & tossing & turning all night.

MissMorrigan -> RE: Earthquake in England? (2/27/2008 1:26:14 AM)

That takes care of most brits' sex lives.
