??? The sight of boxes arouse him sexually ??
From the Encyclopedia Britannica article "fetishism" :"Fetishism as a mental condition may be defined as the necessity to use a nongenital object in order to achieve sexual gratification. "
That's quite a restricted definition imho, but even extended to sexual arousal from non genital objects, I'd be really surprised that someone could be aroused by boxes... oh well after all, why not.

You know what they say about a man wanting to see a woman's box [:D]

GOOD definitions

Or they can just be someone who calls themselves this, who has no partner in the present, and prefers this title.

Herein lies the problem, in my opinion. Master and slave have definitions, they are not just 'titles' although it seems many in this lifestyle want to make them such. Whereas Dominant and submissive are actually personality traits that well suit their use as titles. I will never understand why so many people in this lifestyle/culture want to say things like "call yourself what you want, it doesn't matter, they are all interchangeable". They are not interchangeable and they shouldn't be interchangeable, someone should be able to say, " I am a Master" or "I am a slave" and everyone should know what that means rather than having to 'sort it out'

I can see the logic in that lustiwench. I also wish that in day to day life my coworkers would be called appropriate titles like "labor-dodger", "eccentric postal worker" or "butthead boss" but they don't. I wish every man i had dealt with in the past had been a true Master and not just a dominant egoist. C'est la vie. When you say that you wish you could just say it and it be done and over with, I'm left pondering, why can't one? I mean if they say they are a slave and you disagree, then that would mean they should be called something else but who are you (not you personally of course) to decide? You see, we can't all just sit down and write the big ole book of BDSM rules, labels, titles and definitions. Well, maybe Taggard can but that's different ;) We all generally agree on what constitutes the key essence of what makes each roleplayer.
What we really need is the visual coding system like the handkerchiefs gay males used to wear. If you do this or that and define yourself as a slave perhaps you'd have to wear a certain length of chain or some gauntlets/cuffs ;)
For semiotic lovers see questia.com.

What does "love" mean? Everyone should know what that means rather than having to sort it out.

Switch - see Bi-sexual references :) Can’t decide what they are.

We have decided, and we like both sides of the fence. LOL.

Bisexuality is just the same as having one sexual orientation we are hard wired that way, it's in our genetics.

Being a switch is the same thing you are hard wired genetically to have both personality traits in you, ie dominance and submissive. Or hard wired to be a sadist and a masochist, or to give and recieve (top, bottom).

One can't fight genetics, however one can fight ignorance :)

S&M - edge play. Extreme torture, pain both mental and physical. This is not the Saturday night spanking between hubby and wife(oooo you have been such a naughty boy....) scene. Better be sure what you’re asking for :)

Edge play is a part of sadomasochism, but not all sadomasochism is edge play. I'd say that sadomasochism is about pain (both physical and emotional/mental), plain and simple. There are sadomasochists who avoid edge play and stick to mainstream minimal-risk stuff (which can include spanking, just not sensual spanking), and there are sadomasochists who go out on the edge.

The edge, of course, is relative and defined by whatever happens to not be what everyone's doing. If piss play became a standard favorite for most sadomasochists (an activity with minimal risk but currently a strong "eww" factor), it would no longer be considered "edge."

But yes, it's true that you'd better be sure what you're asking for, if you're going to play with a sadomasochist. Pain does hurt.

I have to agree with lustiwench on her definitions. Dominant and Submissive ARE personality traits and should be defined as such, but I really liked your list of definitions.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Different definitions. (9/21/2005 8:00:47 PM)

Alas, it's usually a losing battle in both cases.
