Ah, come on Kev, the Mirror is no better than the Nat'l Enquirer. Not that I wouldn't put it past the US beaurcracy to do just what is said in the article.. but that is what makes those rags sell then, is it not?? I'll believe it when I see it in a reputable news source.

Of the tabloids the Mirror is one of the better ones if that is saying much. But it has appeared in other papers as well I have been told the story was reported on the news. Now if it was just in the Sun or the Star I would totally agree with you.

Well I can believe this one : For several days 2 french boats with 8 helicopters were waiting the authorisation to go and rescue people on their roofs. I don't think they ever had it.

On the other hand, american troops sent peanut butter to Afghanistan... and people there didn't want it.

One significant indication is there isn't a single named source in the entire story. While many stories require a certain amount of "not for attribution" at least one figure should have been willing to go on the record.

I'm not a fan of the US government about now, but as a former journalist, I get a "gottya" feeling from this story.

I hope you're right, and you probably are : I just googled it and searched the Independent and the Guardian : nothing about this story. I could find a story saying that a A300-600 (the biggest Airbus) full of british and french aid supply went to the Gulf on the 6th or 7th, but nothing more.

rerereedited to add : in fact I could find this story but not in anything reliable. Mostly blogs and other random stupidities.

Apparently the hold up is due to Mad Cow regulations

quote:

It's something the London-based Daily Mirror tabloid calls, "sickening senselessness." Hundreds of tons of British food aid shipped to America for starving Hurricane Katrina survivors is to be burned.
<snip>
Tuesday officials with the USDA remained on the defensive. A USDA spokesperson says the MREs sent from Great Britain must be inspected, and health regulations, specifically involving beef products and the possibility of Mad Cow Disease, cannot be waived. Some of the MREs have been set aside, many have been cleared for use and distributed, and none have yet been destroyed.

We had a search and rescue outfit from my area who was sitting around. Not allowed to go do their job within the search area, for days. Not sure how long it went on but I know they sat a minimum of 5 days.

how very frustrating to be on the edge and not be able to get in to help. kinda makes me understand a bit those who stayed behind determined to help each other out (such as several people who accumulated food, water, boats, etc. to help and then rode out the storm and then helped--dangerous choice, but many lived because of it).
one just hopes that those hoping to help (including your outfit, numerous physicians, and more) won't be too dismayed about offering aide again. it's very much appreciated in every form, and unfortunately will be needed soon again. thanks to each and every one who helped or tried to help, and to those who will realize the need that will continue after the media has left.

gypsysoul -> RE: Thank You America (9/24/2005 5:13:04 AM)

I believe it, or at least some of it.

One of the TV news programs here - 20/20 or 60 Minutes or something - recently broadcast a report about a man whose business sells and transports ice. His trucks were originally hired to take ice to Katrina-ravaged areas, but the US government kept re-routing the trucks. Some were sent to the Carolinas, some were sent to Colorado or Utah, somewhere far from the gulf coast. Whether one blames the local government, the federal government, or a combination of both for the failure to deploy rescue personnel and food and water, plenty of mistakes have been made in dealing with Katrina.

As far as the FDA's involvement is concerned... If the MRE's were allowed in for this national emergency, that sets a precedent, and I'm sure the FDA doesn't want to be usurped from its position of God of All Foods and Drugs that Americans are allowed to purchase/use (legally). Cash is what gets the FDA approval ball rolling; nothing gets FDA-approved without someone laying out a boatload of money for the approval process. I doubt that any individual or organization would put up the money for FDA approval without the guarantee that that approval would benefit their own product exclusively, without competition in the US market. For example, drugs with a certain composition of organic ingredients can not be patented here. Without the exclusivity afforded by patents to market a compound, no one bothers to get FDA approval.

While US troops overseas (not just British?) may be allowed to consume NATO-approved MRE's...well, the US government has not, in the past, been actually opposed to using US troops as guinea pigs. The Tuskegee Airmen and syphilis, Operation Ranch Hand and agent orange, Operation Desert Storm and whoknowswhat...

WickedKev, it isn't the vast majority of Americans who ungratefully and ungraciously rejected this gift.

NakedOnMyChain -> RE: Thank You America (9/25/2005 12:59:07 AM)

That story, true or not, made me sick to my stomach. It may not be the hard truth, but I wouldn't for a second put it past our government. We have assumed the role of global savior (or destroyer, not sure which...and I'm NOT saying there is anything wrong with helping people) but we can't humble ourselves enough to accept aid from other countries to help those DESPERATELY in need of it in our own nation. It's nauseating.
