Following on from the similar thread about guns - if we should be allowed to carry guns and this so that we can defend ourselves and so that the "baddies" are deterred - would it not be better to carry swords?

Swords dont run out of bullets, are highly visible (and we maybe carrying a gun too - which the "baddies" wont know, and provide all the same benefits as those proposed for guns.

And it would solve the obesity and fitness level of the population too - everyone would have to be fit and strong to use the sword properly.

So, should we be allowed to carry swords - and if so, what would you choose?

I want to carry a sword.  It's not allowed most places though, apparently they don't count as arms.

Lumus -> RE: SWORDS - our right to carry! (3/1/2008 3:00:17 AM)

I have access to about ten longblades at a given notice, but I prefer my daggers.

LadyEllen -> RE: SWORDS - our right to carry! (3/1/2008 3:04:49 AM)

Ten, Lumus? Youre not Dr Octopus from Spiderman are you.........?

I only have two - a Chinese repro which is more for show, and a proper real deal mortuary sword (English Civil War 1640s) that was bought for battle reenactment and so is blunt ended and not sharpened - but could be, and then cut someone in half.

And lots, and lots of daggers and knives. People think I'm insane to sleep with a sword and a dagger near the bed, but its one of those "better to have it and not need it" things and in this area, one just never knows.....

LOL!  No, two arms, just more than two blades handy. [;)]

When I practised at the pell I preferred two-weapon fighting style.

Me too Lumus - the two weapon thing. Though a musket isnt the ideal second weapon, it can be used in melee. Better was to ditch my musket with my ex, take her smaller sword (which she hated using) and get stuck in! ah those heady days of youth.....when I could still move quickly and beat 9/10 on the battlefield.....

I voted that I would like to carry a samurai sword as they are the most effective of swords and curved to yield a turning force as they effortlessly slice through an arm or leg. I blame films such as Kill Bill for making me want to carry this sword. I could also swish it through the air swatting bullets out of the air much like those who propose guns can shoot bullets out of the air with their guns.

Heads we're dancing.[8|]

Samuri swords are quite cool almost as cool as the Conan style swords. Wasn't the sword in the highlander movies a samuri style?

SL4V3M4YB3 -> RE: SWORDS - our right to carry! (3/1/2008 8:04:47 AM)

Conan style swords are too heavy and so energy is wasted swinging them about the steel is also not annealed in any special way other than that used to form the shape.[8|]

Been training with a viking sword(short), and dabbling with longswords. I'm part os a historical reinactment group: VIKINGS

Years ago a guy calling himself conan in seattle carried a big sword around with him, it upset so many people that the city finally made an ordinance against it. So one retard with an attitude made it illegal for everyone to do the same.

Yes, the idea is daft.

I own a few thousand dollars worth of swords, knives and other sharp things... I started collecting them when I was about 5, when one of my uncles got me a matching set of gold-plated butterfly knives... I never go anywhere without at least one sharp thing now...

christine1 -> RE: SWORDS - our right to carry! (3/1/2008 9:55:30 AM)

never thought of using a sword for protection, my son has quite a few that he collects...problem is, i can't lift any of them.  i can always rely on my nail file in a jam though, or as Bounty pointed out to me once, sharpened chopsticks in the hair could work too, just as long as i don't fall down and poke myself with them.

littlelostbunny -> RE: SWORDS - our right to carry! (3/1/2008 9:59:51 AM)

Mmmmm, shiny things. [:)]

Even better if the shinies have sharp points.

I would like to learn how to weild a sword. Or at the very least, a knife.

As cool as it seems on paper, however, I don't know that it would be a smart idea to allow everyone to carry swords. Remember,
"It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye. Then it's hey a free eye!"
