I have the same fear. As a child every time I went to the dentist he always found at least 2 cavities on every visit. He never gave me enough novacaine. He told my mother I had soft teeth.

When I hit my teen years we switched dentists. It turns out that my childhood dentist filled my rear teeth multiple times. In some cases up to 4 times. Great, so the guy bilked my mother and tortured the hell out of me to make extra money.

My rear teeth are still my baby teeth. Never lost them. I got my 12 year molars around age 18 and they can't find my wisdom teeth anywhere. I have a full set of molars above the baby teeth that have never have come in. (I've been told that this is fairly common among people of American Indian descent) So, now my issue is that everytime I go to the dentist they want to experiment and see if the can get those teeth to drop. The problems are: A) if it doesn't work, I have no rear teeth and B) it's an experiment I'd have to pay for that my insurance doesn't cover.

Ugh. I am very fortunate to have insurance that covers all My work. They actually cover extra work because My dentist pressured them into doing it (four cleanings a year instead of two).

I have to go back this week. I figure I might as well bring a barf bag, because if it is anything like last time I am going to need it. [:'(] pet said she is going to come with Me again if she can get the time off work. That is comforting, at least.

lol. I feel like a kid bringing Mommy into the dentist's office. hah. What a mental picture that was.

Never been able to understand the fear of dentists.

sometimes it can have something to do with early experiences. some dentists used to think that kids (even up to teenagers) didn't feel pain and did some nasty drilling and cutting without even novocaine. it's akin to how doctors only recently began using local anesthics before circumcision on babies. painful memories can last a while.

I do know an excelent dentist with a great rep who uses hypnosis. I've yet to hear any complaints.

I have to agree with frenchpet.

I am terrified of dentists. I was spoiled as a kid -- our dentist gave us laughing gas for a cleaning. As an adult, one of the first dentists I went to (the dentist of my childhood died) informed me that he would give me novocaine or gas, but not both, and NEITHER for a cleaning.

My current dentist is nice, but I have skipped going to him for years at a time. A visit is an invasion of my mouth, by a man with whom I don't really care to be intimate. The nerves are so close to the brain, which must make the pain more intense. My most recent appointments were to have a filling removed and the remaining tooth crowned. The filling and placement of the temporary crown were bearable. When I returned for the permanent crown, the cement hit a nerve and I just about bolted. Punching the dentist or assistant would have been impolite, so I merely screamed as much as I could with that glue stick thingie and the fingers in my mouth.

I KNOW I'm a big baby when it comes to the dentist.

I get Novacaine for cleanings. I gave them SUCH a hard time when they were cleaning that they had to do something. I am certain that they must hate Me. Why they put up with Me I have no idea, but they even call Me the day before and the day of My appointment to remind Me to come see them. I have the world's worst memory when it comes to appointments. Even writing them down is of little help. Funny thing is, they are always nice and friendly to Me. Go figure.
