I realize even writing the title that this won't be the most popular thread out there.  Though I fully admit, this has been on My mind quite a bit lately.  If the reader has no clue about the subject, feel free to move along and skip the discussion.

Recently, it's occurred to Me that I have a desire to earn My cap.  In this past year, I've been subconsciously doing those things that are parallel to this goal.  I work with educating the community.  I am certainly doing My part for local and national charities.  I've built a strong, poly family home.  I've been recognized in both the vanilla and the lifestyle worlds.

My question is this.  Should I be determined to realize this goal, what would your recommendations be?  Aside from longevity here in GA, what would you suggest?

Well...people are not jumping on this one...<smiles some> but they will.

An unattainable goal for you? No.

First and foremost all I know of you is from your postings here, as well as your subs. I have enjoyed reading from both of you. Complimenting each other you two do well.

At some point I would imagine, you will run/have the title Ms Leather over in Atlanta for a yr...Thats the kind of exposure one like you will flourish in as your not only willing to teach, your willing to stay teachable.

I look forward to reading what other Domme`s have to say...

The best to you and yours....

I think about this occasionally, but I suppose I don't think much about what I need to do, or should do to actually 'earn' my cover...

I do what I do... although I'm sure I could do more.. for me, while doing things in the communities, all kinds of things are important, I'm more inclined to think of it as something I'd like from my peers.. my friends.. people who believe that I have earned my Master's cap...

I'm very old school and would never ever wear one unless it had been given to me..

for my perspective, I'd keep doing what you're doing... and for me, working toward it would not be the way I'd go.. but that's simply me.. I think what you're doing is great... its certainly more than I am..

and as mentioned.. definitely, if you've the time and stamina.. and the interest.. run for Ms SELF... its a GREAT title... and great people run that event.. go for it!

oh.. and yet another edit.. I do not believe you need a title to make a mark in the leather community.. you can do that if you want to... there are many that do...

good luck!  I look forward to a picture of you with it on!

and another edit:  as I reread this, I realize what I was trying to say was -- I'd rather have it because someone else decided I was worthy of the title Master, rather than for my deeds... I tend to think giving to community is something everyone does.. and while some should be recognized for it.. I would rather just be doing it for the sake, that old 'service' thing.. rather than thinking about earning a cap...

that said... what you've said is a very legit way to earn it.. and something that many have done.. .large and small.. nationally or not.. really..

I guess what sorts of things earned caps for others in the past?  who has the illumination to give you such an accolade, that is, I have never heard of you...How large do you have to loom nationally to get a cap?  Whether you would like to think so or not, I assure you it is a purely political process, you would have to be seen, respected and liked by a great number of people in the community. Speeches, perhaps more demos (with some specialization that is lacking in general in the area), hosting events,  running for these offices such as  MzAtlanta or whatever, and so on.

Sorry, I can't be more helpful but it is not a sandbox I would play in, but I am not put out by those who do.

I think Madame4a has the right idea.
I was awarded my cover when I was certainly not expecting it.
Certainly though the one thing I would say would be something you should do to move towards the goal, makeing sure folks who are involved in the tradition of earned leather are aware that you have chosen to follow that path. Then you have to make sure you spend time where those other people who follow that tradition will be able to see you. In the case of the cap/cover it's a little easier to tell because you basicly have to be around those folks who have "earned theirs".  Remember that these things are often subjectively based. No set of steps will ever be universally accepted for earning leather.

Beyond that I think it can be seen as campaigning for it. which is likely to work in the opposite direction.

Do you mean that you want to run in a leather event?

Interesting...not being of the leather lifestyle, I am flummoxed.  Am I to understand that if you want a cap awarded you, you should demur from exposing that intent?

Curiously,

Ron, what Archer is referring to is that sometimes people want the prize too much (be it a leather cap, a MacArthur Foundation Genius Grant, or the Presidency of the USA).  Those people often are discounted because they want it so much.

To Lady Pact:  If you are in a group of leatherfolk who follow this tradition and you've been engaged, active and around for a while, my suspicion is it will happen.  But if your group does not have a tradition of caps or sashes that are "spontaneously" awarded, you might find it rather difficult to earn your colors.  What is the expectation in your community?

Good luck.

I was going to ask that, and this answer seems sufficient. Makes the same kind of sense.

I can't answer the question from Lady Pact, but I'll be following this thread with great interest. Always looking to learn more about leather culture.

Absolutely it is my understanding that things happen when you least expect. Campagining will only get you less than you want. That your activities in the community need to be selfless and without expectation of reward. I wonder at how subconscienously your efforts are aware of the motivation behind your actions and how transparent they might appear to you peers. I am  aware of people who have worked in the community for more than a decade and have yet to recieve their vests or caps. However, my understanding is that asking to be mentored will often help you on the path toward investiture. That's my two cents worth.

Running for a leather title does not cause one to earn a Master's cover.  That is generally bestowed to one by a mentor or one's local community as recognition for accomplishment and mastery.

Just checking back on My own thread.  My thanks to those who participated, and gave their comments.

The funny thing about this is, it is not something I want to campaign for.  It's something that I want to earn.  That might not necessarily make sense to some, but I'm afraid I don't have a better way to explain it.  I know it's not something that I'll deserve next month or even next year.  There's a lot between then and now.

I wanted to thank Madame4a, Archer (My best to Elegant, btw), and the others who understood the intent of the post.  I'd also like to thank the folks who asked questions here and on the other side about the subject.  The very thought of that makes Me smile.  Even just the topic of old leather gave some folks a chance to learn something new, and there's always a benefit to that.

Lady Pact > It really is an honor when people you respect in this community see what your doing and  recognize you for your efforts upon your quest .If i may share - When i was presented with my  leather vest , i had not one clue it was going to happen .I was simply invited to a party , what i thought was just going to be a private bdsm party gathering  at a home .People greeted me and i was sat in a chair in the middle of all those in attendance then was presented a Leather vest from many i knew and some i had only brief interactions with .I was very honored .And to this day i try and  continue to honor those who bestowed that upon me as well as myself . And i constantly strive for growth and learning ,mentoring those who wish it , teaching those who want it .its like i was told by my first mentor , we have two ears  and one mouth ,use them both well and with care .
again best wishes upon your path .
Brightest blessings ..

It would be something of an odd question if I wasn't, or at least partial to.

Not exactly, Hmmmmmmmm how to put this.

There is a fine line between letting folks know that eventually you would love to be presented with a Master's Cover.
and telling folks I'm working like mad in hopes that someone will see what I have done as being worthy.

Having it as a Someday maybe goal vs having it as a I'm doing XYZ to achieve the goal.

LadyPact,

I did not ask you in an attempt to insult or belittle you.  I only ask because I know of a number of people that have sought a Leatherman's Master's Cap who have no idea what Leather even is.  It would be a silly question if it also wasn't so necessary - lol.

I am going to preface my bit of advice with "I don't know you, your community, your place in your community, or how your community operates".  I can only speak from my own experiences and the communities that I am familiar with.

To the topic of 'the Leather Journey' (I hope this is what you are really getting at when you talk about a Master's cap) - the sad truth is that you have to be seen going on that journey.  Like a lot of things you have to know the right people and circulate in the right circles.  It is only by doing this that the people who matter can judge if you have the right attitude and character to be worthy of their teachings (let alone given a Master's cap).  Many people have been around a long time and just haven't evolved or grown.  The point of the journey is to grow and learn.  How can people know that you have evolved if they don't know you?  Knowing 'of you' just isn't enough in this case.

This is my opinion and of course your mileage may vary.
