flyingwind66 -> Published vs Internet D/s books/stories (3/1/2008 10:28:06 PM)

honestly I find that the stuff I find on the web at places like bdsm library and adultfanfiction have better stories than published books (mind you there are also tonnes of garbage to wade through but it's not too hard to do that... normally you can tell within a few sentences if the author is a grammatically incoherant 13 year old)

It seems to me that published books within this genre are all about the same thing: training in a big 'household' by many people.  It REALLY bugs me... from 'story of O' to Anne Rice's sleeping beauty series to susan wright to this one a friend lent me by kevin reynard about a girl named Miranda (all sorts of blood/needle play in that... and bad attempts at anime artwork to...)

well admittedly, Susan Wright's book seems to go into a more 'exclusive relationship' in the 2nd book but still!

the strange thing is that while I love 'rape fantasies' and the 'non-consent' factor, I DON'T like it when it's multiple Dom/mes... it becomes less personal I guess.

On a whole, I guess my gripe is that it's not my kink and while I still respect people who do like it, I just don't get why it seems like all the published books cater to that particular 'fetish'

the only book I can name off the top of my head where the 'sub' belonged to only one 'Dom' the entire book was; the dream thif' by Shana Abe and that book wasn't even supposed to be in the genre! (I recomend it btw ... she has dreams about him owning a magic stone that controls her and they get explicit)

what do the rest of you think on this? agree with me? dont' agree with me? have reccomendations for other books?

Porn is written for men and marketed to men. And men get off on the idea of having tons of girls to choose from.

Even though women do buy a lot, the publishers don't think of us as the target audience so things aren't published that might appeal to us.

Bound2One -> RE: Published vs Internet D/s books/stories (3/2/2008 7:18:13 AM)

You could try online publishers and purchase e-books.  There are a few out there that may have something you're looking for.  Try www.ellorascave.com or www.freyasbower.com

Erotica is primarily written for women. Men prefer the visual - hence the huge market for visual porn on the internet. Always has been and always will be. Evidently that stuff is what they think women like to read.

RedMagic1 -> RE: Published vs Internet D/s books/stories (3/2/2008 7:55:30 AM)

Try lesbian porn.  There are a lot of D/s themes.  It's often shelved in the "gay" section in bookstores, even mainstream ones like Borders.  Women write better smut.  It's more romantic, and some of the sex scenes could actually happen in real life.

My, what a sheltered upbringing you have had. The range of material available in the printed word goes far beyond the limits you suggest. You just have to look a little harder than you appear to have done so far ...

Silver moon is like the black lace of BDSM and have a load of titles http://www.adultbookshops.com/index.html its just a case of trying a load out and finding one that suits, I tend to just mass buy them from e-bay as they are cheap and see which ones work, even the ones that arent realistic still have moments, i have yet to buy one that did absolutly nothing for me.

Not sure why it is. But I do tend to agree with you. The Anne Rice books did not impress me much. The most fun part of them for me. Was having them read to me in bed each night and seeing the excitement in the person who was doing the reading.

But I am like you. I think a good old force fantasy is much better when it is one on one .Seems much more realistic and leaves more room for emotional development . The Anne Rice style of books. Are to me. Kinda like some big effects movies. Big grand visuals that distract from the story instead of helping it.  Course I am not into groups in real life. So that could have something to do with it as well.

Havn't done it in some time. But have on a few occasions written stories for people I knew centered around a particular kink they had or a fantasy I had about them.. They always seemed to go over well but it helps when  you know your audience well.:)

     When it comes to short stories, online typically has material that is the equal or better of stuff that gets published. I'm not sure if this is just because it's a lot harder to get short stories published? However, even when looking at novel-length stuff, a lot of the kinky reading on store shelves (or even off it) tends to be somewhat dissapointing. This is because there aren't really all that many people looking to read hardcore BDSM literature. Online, a person can post a story they've written with no worries about how many people will buy it, will it be profitable, etc.
    I imagine that you could find some better published works from smaller publishers or online. The Barnes & Noble at the mall doesn't have a really big BDSM section, last I checked.

   Actually, both the books I've read that followed this plot set-up were written by women. And, judging by the romanticy photos on the cover, primarily read by them. The majority of the erotica I've read (this might not be the case across the board) was written by women.

bingo! and what travelgman said too... women tend to like the literature, men tend to liek the visuals... and I just finished an ebook I found at adultbookshops in the silvermoon series reccomended by colouredin... "girl in the golden mask"

I didn't like the ending... if they wanted her to end up... where she did then maybe at least send her home so she could go back on her own terms instead of just 'you have no where else to go, so we're gonna plop you here' ...

in fact, I still had to wade through tonnes of stuff stating outright that there would be 'masters' and 'mistresses' and still this one had the whole serving many thing again...

I dont' know about you guys but doesn't it BUG you that this is what people not in the community think bdsm is all about? group sex? or men tellign their lovers to 'go have ses with all these other guys because it pleases me'?

honestly my fantasy Dom would tell me "you're mine and only mine" or something like that...

I live in Canada... there's no Barnes and Nobles here, our big bookstore here is called Chapters ^_^

for the record... anne rice's sleeping beauty series actually had a totally awesome ending! the only ending I've ever found in a bdsm book I actually really loved... probably because she DOES end up going home afterwords and she gets picked up by ONE Master in the end.

daddysblondie -> RE: Published vs Internet D/s books/stories (3/2/2008 10:33:13 PM)

I doubt you would find it in your local bookstore, but I know it's on Amazon. The book is called Whispered Dreams by Olivia Faulkner.

It fits with the desire to see a relationship where the submissive has only one Dom through the whole book. I was told she was going to write others, I don't know if she has yet.
