winterlight -> i am trying to get my new kitten to come when i call her (3/2/2008 10:20:12 PM)

I give her treats if she comes to me. Any other suggestions?

I would like to train her to do a few things.

I'm not exactly sure how I got my cats to know their names but they do. Just say her name a lot and make sure it's a simple name. Not like "Miss Kitty Leather Spanky Pants."

Probably keep using treats and say her name. And say her name when you pet her. Just re-enforce that when you say her name you're talking to her.

As a cat person, you will come to learn some things. First off you dont own her, she owns you. Second, if she is a smart cat, she will learn her name. It takes time, just like teaching a baby its name.
Treats and petting are a good step, but if she doesnt want to learn she will be stubborn and not learn. My cat for instance, knows her name, knows the sound of the fridge, but not the word no. No matter how many times I twack her nose, or with hold the cat nip, she still will not listen if I tell her no to something. Just how cats are. I wish you luck. ^_^;;

Treats are treats, not for training. You'll have one chubby, demanding kitten in no time.

Clicker training is the lo calorie way to go.

Cats do not have owners... They have staff.
Get a dog. They are more obedient.

If you are a Domme, you should get a dog. They are much more like subs, in that they take training. If you are a submissive, then you are most likely a cat person. They will train you.

ignore the cat.   then he will wander over

That's an interesting way to look at the cats/dogs thing [:D] .

I agree with Zensee.  If there's a PetSmart, PetCo or something similiar in your area, they can give you advice on how to do it.

Park yourself on the couch with a newspaper. The cat will be on your lap in about 15 seconds.

Also, I think they hear tones better than words.I have had up to three cats at once, and I could call them individually, but I had a separate inflection for each name. Treats weren't required, just kitty massage. Keep saying the name while you rub the little retard into drooling bliss, and they will associate the name with their existence.

As someone mentioned, do not use treats to train a cat to come to to you.

Cats like treats at three in the morning when you are passed out after partying. I currently have one that thinks its acceptable to very gently rake his claws over my flesh to wake me for treats, and another that burrows under the covers and licks the bottoms of my feet.

I forgot to mention before: I can not adequately describe how disappointed I was that this thread was about cats.

Why give a name to something that refuses to come when you call it?

I always thought that the best name for a cat was "dinner"

At least you would get some action from the "pillow with legs" when it hears you filling the food bowl.

I have several cats, and a small dog. The dog has deffinitely been easier to train! But I do have one cat that knows sit. Yes I'm serious! Usually I use it when I'm preparing food or doleing out treats, but when I say his name and sit he does. He also knows up, as in stand up on his hind legs. Other than that he is a typical kitty. I don't have trouble with being woken for or having treats demanded. I randomly give them. Not every day and not the same time of the day. Two of the cats and the pup will sit in a line and wait somewhat patiently for theirs. I usually break things up into little tidbits, so there's no serious weight problem. Perhaps you could do that and if your cat is food motivated, avoid weight problems that way. In the end cats are independent and like people come in various personalities, some trainable, some not so much. Just enjoy your little fuzzy guy/girl for who it is.

That's just about the funniest thing I've ever heard. "Train her"....stop it...I'm gonna pee my pants. I have...live with...six of the little gangsters. They all know their names and some of them actually come when I call up to 40% of the time. Treats are not a good idea for the reasons cited by zensee and caitlyn. Talking to the cat, saying her name alot, with lots of affection and eye contact has worked for me.

You can also lay some maps or other important work-related documents out on a table and start working on them. You have to actually be working on them. You can't fake it; they can tell if you're faking. Anyway, start working and, voila, within 5 to 10 minutes your kitty will be lying comfortably on the subject document, on the exact spot that you are trying to see. This always works. Since it's tax time, you might want to try it with your tax return form. Good luck.

Dogs come when you call them. Cats take your number and get back to you when it's convenient to them.

I had a special tone of voice to call my cat for treats. That was the only tone she'd respond to. Can openers were another sound she came running for.

The only "trick" she'd do was one she taught me. At one apartment she would sit on the windowsill with her tail hanging below the closed vertical blinds. I'd pretend I couldn't see her and say, "Where's the cat?" She couldn't resist twitching her tail. For some reason, that reaction continued the rest of her life. Wherever she was, if I said, "Where's the cat?" she'd twitch her tail. Not a very interesting or useful trick, but we got a laugh out of it.
