LadyEllen -> RE: Is Obama a Muslim or not? (3/3/2008 6:41:16 AM)

The problem is, one cannot take the religious worldview out of the person - so it is important that we know the religious worldview of candidates, since that worldview will affect whatever they decide in some way or another.

But at the same time, as Level says, the religious worldview of the person cannot be allowed to become a discriminatory factor in how decisions are reached which affect all, nor to become a discriminatory factor in what decisions are made.

But ultimately the problem here seems to be that the US electorate are perfectly happy with candidates for, and eventual occupiers of an office having a religious worldview - as long as that worldview is Christian.

You raise a good point, in that many people being served by the politician are likely to not be of his faith, or any faith, and the politician owes them every bit as much as he does those of his faith.

Thank you for translating my fuzzy thinking into intelligible thought [:)] .

I respectfully differ with this point.

I attend church every Sunday. If there is an event sponsored by the church that is fun, or helpful to the community, I attend that also. I would bet I'm active in our church, in the top ten percentile.

That said, I differ with the position of my church on just about every major political issue other than abortion, and even with that issue, I find my church's position against contraception, to be a little moronic. We have a deacon in our church that is very political, and when he gives the sermon every four Sundays or so, he does so with a political slant. I sit in the audience, roll my eyes and look around the church for good looking men.

I think it entirely plausable that religion can have nothing to do with a person's world view. It certainly has nothing to do with mine. If the church took account of my world view, they would be locking the doors in front of me. [;)]

CuriousLord -> RE: Is Obama a Muslim or not? (3/3/2008 6:57:48 AM)

It's an interesting line of apparently researched information.  It strikes me as exagerrating even the minor, admittedly moot point it has, though.

Such as.. is Obama a Muslum?  I doubt anyone would hold that someone is the religion that they were exposed to as a child simply because of that exposure, even if it was chosen over others when given the mandate to choose one.  (I imagine most atheists would have a choice of religious study, if they had to pick one, such as in the case Obama was apparently presented with as a child.)

So there's no reason to believe he's a Muslum.

Was he at some point in his life?  It seems plausible he may've claimed it at some point in his childhood.  It's also pluasible he didn't.  Either way, he was just a kid.

Will it matter if he's president?  Yeah.. I doubt that one.  And even if it did, who cares?  If I'm not going to care if racists are angered by him, I'm going to stick with that and not give a damn if religious nuts are angered by him.

Could it be that religion does affect your world view, but that you see your religion differently than the others in your church?

caitlyn -> RE: Is Obama a Muslim or not? (3/3/2008 7:13:57 AM)

I think not. My world views are shaped by the reading of history, current events, and intelligent interaction with people I know very well, who are older and more wise than myself.

DesFIP -> RE: Is Obama a Muslim or not? (3/3/2008 9:09:17 AM)

He's spent twenty some years in the same church. The fact that his stepfather decided he would be registered Muslim doesn't mean anything except that he spent two years under the stepfather's control and that the stepfather is a controlling creep who decided to forceably change a child's religion.

kittinSol -> RE: Is Obama a Muslim or not? (3/3/2008 11:20:12 AM)

Actually, there's no such thing as 'a registered Muslim'. In fact, unless raised a Muslim, a person just has to say they believe in Allah, the only God, and that Muhammad is his prophet in order to convert to Islam. That's pretty much it; one doesn't even need witnesses.

You say it, you've done it. They don't keep records (there is no central authority to Islam - some would argue that it would be a good thing if there was).

The op is from Texas...Bush is from Texas....Level Texan...caitlyn Texan....What does it all mean?

Bush is an idiot...The op?...hmmmm...Level he's on block so i'm not sure if he has posted anything intelligent in the last 10 months or not. Caitlyn likes to get drunk and fuck.

Of all the Texans I have ever met...I believe that caitlyn is on the right track. What does this have to do with Obama. Not much. But I think it is important to mention that caitlyn likes to get drunk and fuck. I wish more people in Texas were like caitlyn. Level is still on block.

HouseDV8 -> RE: Is Obama a Muslim or not? (3/3/2008 6:15:59 PM)

This is really dumb. First...WHY? WHO CARES! Second, the arguement is stupid. Whether or not the faith claims him, he does not claim the faith. Third, even if he did, who fucking cares!!!! Have you noticed that electing Christians didnt do us any good? We now have a president that is trying to take us to Rapture by creating World End.

i do not believe in Rapture...you cannot take me where i do not believe...but you sure as hell can piss off the rest of the world to the point where everyone gets blown up.

Now, do you want to be blown up because you believe in Rapture? I will take the Muslim/non-Muslim ANTI-WAR candidate anyday...

That said...anyone can be a puppet. I heard a show on NPR the other day where they were allowing people to call in with their conspiracy theories. One lady called in saying that she did not believe we actually EVER elected a president...that it is always predetermined and that if McCain did not win she would be utterly and totally shocked...the host pointed out that anyone can be a puppet; that for all we know  they take the new elect in a room and show them a video tape of the Kennedy assasination from an angle no one has ever seen. Then he asked her if Obama was elected did that change her theory? She thought about it and then she decided that it didn't.

Phin -> RE: Is Obama a Muslim or not? (3/3/2008 7:02:06 PM)

who gives a flying fuck?

a line from a Law and Order episode when Jack is talking to a Muslim lawer. "Please dont confuse his politics with my religion." There are radical Islamists then there are some that without being told you wouldnt know their religion.

Didn't we have the debate about discriminating against a candidate because of religion in 1960?

Who the hell cares?
The real question is - can he do the job?
Isn't that what we are to look at when interviewing anyone for a job?
