See? This is why I wish they were all agnostics or atheists. I mean, they probably are agnostics and atheists privately - but publicly they have to claim to be religious to get the votes. That's what they think anyway.

But when you examine the religious beliefs of any such person it starts to get very surreal very quickly.

It's fucking insane!

Just watch the shit fly, when they find out he's really black.....

Honestly I dont know why so many seem to get so uptight about all this stuff; we've got a Presbyterian running things here and we're alright - we still get to drink and smoke and play loud music and stay up late

Does anybody else agree that America is one of the most divided societies? It's as if people sought out segregation. They remain ensconced in their ethnic and religious divides. I see it, but I don't understand it.

Perhaps the press is entirely to blame, as it plays up differences to make headlines fodder.

mnottertail -> RE: Is Mitt Romney a Mormon or not (3/3/2008 6:47:49 AM)

Well I don't know who was the idiot that came up with the crap of 'melting pot', but it surely aint.  Look at america, ghetto after ghetto, Irish on the west side, chinatown, projects, little Italy, the barrio,  like that all over.  We've always been polarized, to some degree, sometimes more, sometimes less.

I am a FoMo (former Mormom), and I'll give answer as best I can with my allergy head.

Mountian Meadows is an unfortunate event that happened in the early years of the Mormons colonization of Utah.  Leaders were not implicated and several men were convicted of the massacre.  The church itself has a hard time reconciling with it, some will ignore it, some will say that those who participated were not true members of the church, others will say they were acting on misguided beliefs.  No Mormon in this day and age condones the actions.

Yes, this is part of LDS belief

My answers are in green, the last 2 questions don't seem to tie into Mormonism so I'll leave them alone.

I wonder why the melting pot is such a pretty myth and not much else, and whether the original colons are to blame for the innate sense of superiority of the WASP class - which prevails to this day. Anybody who arrived after they did is less worthy than them.

It's surprising to me that a meritocratic society like America is more reliant on class and ethnicity than an old monarchy like England. If anybody's been to London... there is a melting-pot extraordinaire. People have beautiful caramel children with blond kinky hair and turquoise eyes. Sounds like utopia, doesn't it... perhaps I'm just hopelessly nostalgic :-) .

According to South Park, America was originally set up to allow us to do what we want, and complain about it.

This allows us to do anything and never take any responsibility for it.

Nope, the entire world is exactly the same.  Travel and go off the beaten path and you'll find out.

One difference may be that in a homogenous society it won't be as apparent.  But ask your average Japanese what they think of Koreans.  And vice versa.  Not much love lost.  Nothing uniquely evil about the U.S., except for those who want to think so.  Human nature is human nature everywhere.

The Mountain Meadows Massacre was carried out by Brigham Young's proteges and Young actively participated in the cover up.

George A. Smith's, a member of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles, traveling party directed the Fancher party to Mountain Meadows despite knowing the Nauvoo Legion expected the US Army to come from that direction at that time and that the Legion was eager to fight and very poorly disciplined.

The degree of complicity of Mormon leadership can be debated but not the fact that Mormon leadership was involved.

mnottertail -> RE: Is Mitt Romney a Mormon or not (3/3/2008 9:10:06 AM)

Well, do you suppose this is all a lead-in to a setup to install Mitt Romney as FBI Director so the right-wing radicals can impose martial law in the US under the guise of homeland security?

That way, John McCain (or more likely by signing statement George Bush) can keep us in the Middle East for a 1,000 years, and Rush Limbaugh will never be denied the airwaves to spew idiotic shit forever, and the neo-con radicals can bankrupt our nation and sell us down the river, all the while using the cover of the undeniable six-degrees of separation between Obama and someone who has met Farrakhan?

This would distract anyone with a brain, thru the very act of eating it, that the neo-con sects have bankrupted the united states, have had the most atrocious record on human rights violations, legal violations,  and have not done one iota of good in all their administrations, yet foisting a president with no 'experience' i.e Ronald Reagan, George Bush and so on, inharmoniously point out that Obama has never been president before and with the sky falling will ruin us all.

Or do you think they are just whining?

Actually, I have come off the beaten path and ended up in New Hampshire [:D] . I come from elsewhere. I'm an alien, MichiganHeadmast :-) .

This is why I stand as an interested outside observer of this country, even though I live in it. I'm a recent arrival, if you like.

It's useless to argue Brigham Young's involvement, some will say that he had no knowlege, others will argue that it ws carried out on his orders.  The facts are simply that he was not tried nor convicted.  I feel that many Mormons do a diservice to their public image by pretending that there was no LDS involvement at all since the key players were in fact Mormons.  By distancing themselves and pretending it never happens opens the flood gates of negative conjecture.

Bringham Young was a man of his time and circumstance.  It was a bloody time for Mormons and non-Mormons alike and people were often shot with the smallest prevocation

To hold Mitt Romney or any other present day LDS accountable for the actions that took place at the time would be like holding a present day Catholic accountable for the inquisition.
