Y'know, there really hasn't been an album like Ghosts put out that I know of, and it's too broad (again, from standard industrial sounds to ambience) to come from any one influence. Well, okay, Westwood released a "music inspired by" CD with the game Tiberian Sun, and that had a bit of range to it too. But even that's a really far reach.

Talking about the biz side of things:

I didn't pay a dime for "In Rainbows" when it came out but I was given the deluxe book set (vinyl, CDS, stickers. etc) for Xmas this last year. So I guess it all works out in the end.

Darcy purchased me the box set for chrimbo... I get all orgasmic when I get it out to have a ponder over...[:)]  He purchased tickets for the gig when they play in London too.  So yeah... working out rocks!(and I am a spoilt .dark.girl)

NIN - If you cant comprehend his music, and how he releases it, then thats your own ignorance. If you simply dont like it, well, thats your tastes. We all have different ones. If you pay attention to the way his albums have been put out, he releases a LOT of singles and a remix album with each legit album. He revamps all his work all the time, and most of it actually has a story to it. If you look deeper then the sounds, you will see it. I personally love his creativity and the complexity of his work. To say that he hit a creative wall is a bit of an understatement though, at least until he release the fragile. After that it was more his battles with Universal that impeded his work. Now he is making music and material that has been consistantly blowing the competetion out of the water, without nearly as much radio play.

oh yeah, one more thing, if he put out that same type album now, that sounded like down in it, or pretty hate machine, you would all be complaining about how unoriginal it is. take his art work for what it is and enjoy his creativity.

Check out "Still"
its a mainly instumental album that came out as a special package with the fragile, extremely rare at the time. Its a very melodic album, nicknamed the sleepy halo for a good reason. I love it, and still play it a lot. Lucky, me, I found it for a "bargain" at $55, only to find out that 2 weeks later trent started mass producing still and selling it for $13. Im still glad I bought it though, because to my knowelege is first press. If you want to know more about NIN let me know, cause if I dont know the answer I know where to get it.

wkdshadow -> RE: New NiN (3/5/2008 3:41:56 PM)

That's true, I forgot about Still. There's still something about it that sets it apart from Ghosts, it's more of a "sad" album. Adrift and at peace(one of the tracks) is more Ghosts like than any of the others, and even then it's not quite the same.

This is Darcy

Interesting to hear all the thoughts on this, particularly as I've been a NIN fan for close on 20 years now.

Got to run for a train, but may have more thoughts later..... :)

thickerdenwater -> RE: New NiN (3/6/2008 8:14:14 PM)

An awesome playlist, ringfinger is my fave as well

1. Ringefinger
2. Just like you imagined
3. Deep
4. Fist Fuck
5. Every thing is exactly the same / We're in this together (tie)

To be honest, I really do love everything Ive heard him put out since he formed the NIN formula. But these are the ones I listen to the most, and Im sure the list will be changing with time. Hell I basically have all his music on on continuous loop when I have him on.

Darcy:

My problem with Reznor is simply this: I prefer the work of his heroes, to his own work. To be more precise, I really like the work of Bowie, Eno, Joy Division, Throbbing Gristle, Coil (post-TG members), and J.G. Thirlwell (a.k.a. Foetus). Hell, you can add Queen and Adam Ant to that list also. I just find Reznor's work very derivative after "Broken"/"Fixed." I can throw in the song "Closer" from "The Downward Spiral" as being an important work, but the rest of the album felt a bit like remixes of the one song to me. Beyond that, I prefer his collaborative efforts with Bowie and Eno on a bit of "Outside" (a magnificent, often overlooked work in which Reznor's influence is very apparent - also probably Bowie's last good work after a long career of being stunningly brilliant) and Saul Williams on "Niggy Tardust."

If he weren't himself, I'd say Reznor would obviously really like to be Foetus. His musical stylings and imagery scream Foetus.

Just sayin'...

To be fair, I haven't listened to a full Nine Inch Nails album since the Downward Spiral. I always thought him to sound more like Skinny Puppy (sometimes to the point of being little but a plagiarist, in the case of "Down in It.")

Maybe I'll like him more if he's moved towards Thirlwell's style, ha! I somehow doubt he would be able to concoct lyrics quite as clever/insightful/hilarious as Thirlwell's, however.

thickerdenwater -> RE: New NiN (3/7/2008 1:28:58 PM)

NIN hasnt sounded like Skinny Puppy since down in it, at all. skinny puppy did jump start his career though. and i think you need to listen to a bit more of both if you still think they sound alike. Skinny Puppy is a LOT more harsh and distorted.

Yikes, all I was saying is that Nine Inch Nails sounds MORE LIKE Skinny Puppy than Foetus, which I believe to be a fair statement. Not all Skinny Puppy is harsh and distorted, in any case (Killing Game and Candle, for starters.)

I admitted that I stopped listening to Nine Inch Nails, oh, a decade ago, as a preface to this statement. Why? I find them boring and derivative, and there's music more suited to my tastes out there. You can disagree with this, which is fine, but you're not going to change my mind, and I'm not too concerned about changing yours. It is, after all, just music.

Please don't question how much Skinny Puppy I've listened to, however, as that really gets my hackles up. [;)]

thickerdenwater -> RE: New NiN (3/7/2008 4:14:01 PM)

LOL i think i came off a bit strong. but in my defence, you did say they "(sometimes to the point of being little but a plagiarist, in the case of "Down in It.")" which is a strong conotation,  esp since i listen a LOT of both. killing game is good, not as harsh as most of skinny puppy, but still a bit more distorted then most of NIN.

What do you listen to now?

MollHackabout -> RE: New NiN (3/7/2008 8:20:29 PM)

I was poking around the internet a bit, and I see that Reznor has fully admitted Down In It was a rip off of Dig It. [:D] Good on him for owning up!

As per what I'm listening to now, a lot less industrial that I have historically! I think I'm mellowing out in my 'old age' - a lot of Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Neko Case... Also, some IDM - Lemon Jelly, Autechre, and Aphex Twin in particular. And I throw in some old school punk and psychobilly when I'm feeling nostalgic!

Leatherist -> RE: New NiN (3/7/2008 8:29:16 PM)

I've always Liked at least half of reznor's songs overall. A lot of them just come across as noise to me-but that's pretty much the way a lot of other artists come across as well.

I like the idea that the coporate pigs who are protecting THIER Profits by going after small music sharers are now getting some of thier own back-in ways they can do nothing about.

Way to go Trent. I hope this becomes VERY popular.

thickerdenwater -> RE: New NiN (3/7/2008 11:14:25 PM)

well so far, he had a ultra-limited set that cost $300, and it sold out in less then 2 days. 2500 pieces @$300 a piece. less the 2 days. wow. $750,000 made in less then 2 days. SICK.

marsneedswomen -> RE: New NiN (3/7/2008 11:58:32 PM)

I can always pick out Reznor's sound but its always his lyrics that make him listenable.

thickerdenwater -> RE: New NiN (3/8/2008 10:23:42 AM)

His earlier music is a lot more depressing if you disect it, but its well written. I like how one person put his music, "a symphony of noise". He usually incorporates a wide variety of instrumental sounds, more so then pretty much anyone Ive heard in the past 10 years or so. Thats a huge part of why I like his music so much. I have a thing for piano's in industrial/rock music, fits so well and sounds so goooooood :D

SugarMyChurro -> RE: New NiN (3/8/2008 10:33:01 AM)

thickerdenwater:

Have you ever heard Foetus? Because if not, it sounds like you really should:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foetus_(band)

The description you give of Reznor's music is the description I would instead give to Foetus' music. Knowing both, I know who influenced who. And it flows downstream from Foetus to NIN. Foetus is the fountainhead of this stuff.
