I realize we are not all customer service personell. But when I was in that occupation, I trained new reps. One of the first things I taught them was: "You may get tired of having the same question asked 50 times in an hour, and you may be tempted to get snippy and sarcastic with the person asking the question. But you must remember that this is the FIRST TIME that particular person is asking that question." Yes, topics have been discussed, argued, flamed over, ad nauseum, and the equine corpses are buried in the archives. They can indeed be exhumed via the search feature. But, suppose someone resurrect a topic that another new member hadn't thought to discuss, and that other new member has a brilliant insight that had not surfaced in old threads. Just because a person has been on the boards for eons and has been there, done that 60 times already doesn't mean that every aspect of every question has already been examined. If that were the case, then all we'd need would be a library of topics for everyone to peruse, and no need for an active, fluid dialogue.
