bleusparkles -> Loss of Appetite (3/4/2008 11:13:21 AM)

I had the flu for a week; the coughing, fever, achiness, wanting to die kind ... Not the stomach kind. While I was sick I lived on berry smoothies and chicken soup.

Now I have absolutely ZERO desire to eat or drink ... I'm basically forcing myself to drink water and eat at least a bowl of cereal and milk every day but its been three days now and I'm getting concerned. I'm wiped out all the time. Going up and down the stairs to take the dog outside and check the mail feels like too much work. I go to bed at night and sleep for ten solid hours before I wake up and then I'm still tired ...

I went to Chili's yesterday, hoping to convince myself to eat something ... I sat there staring at the menu for half an hour because NOTHING looked good. I brought my entree home after eating like three bites.

Has this ever happened to anyone else here? How long did it take to want to eat again? Any tips for things I can try to give myself a kick?

Hello. sorry to hear this.    With me I know when I dont want coffee -then something is  up.

This years flu shot is wrong.  way off.

Do you have a fever?

Ild monitor myself carefully at this point.   If you are not hungry there is a reason.   Hydration is important.

Anyhow do you have the cough still?  bringing up flem-if so what color is it?

The flu is a bitch, and I've gotten it so bad that even tho the symptoms went away, I didn't want to eat either.  You're still actually recovering from it, at least that's what the doc told me when I finally went.  Just make sure you eat something, but more importantly, DRINK lots of fluids!  Eventually, you'll start to feel like eating again.  And eat anything, even if it's junk food.....at least you're putting calories into your body.  I lost two and a half weeks from work the last time I had it.....and I only felt like dying for the first week...the rest of the time it was all I could do to get out of bed because I was exhausted....one other thing...my flu actually developed into viral pneumonia......the only symptom I had of that was that when I laid down, it felt like there was an elephant sitting on my chest.  If you develop that problem, go to the doc.  There isn't much they can do for it, but at least you'll know why you feel like crap!

The chicken soup thing probably isn't a bad idea......keep trying to get that down.....6,000,000 grandmothers can't be wrong!  Hope you feel better soon......

I can stare at Chili's menu for a really long time, and not find much that I would actually want to eat. Might wanna try a yummier restaurant next time...

I go through this sometimes after being sick.  It usually lasts a few days, maybe a week, and then eventually comes back together.  I think it's from laying around feeling lethargic, that lethargy gets all consuming (wow, no pun intended there, but, cool!).  My appetite is so crazily connected to my mood (I don't recommend that, lol) so when I'm not feeling 100% I don't even think about eating.  As I start feeling better, my appetite returns.

Chicken soup is good (although boring after awhile) because you get protein and calories while not feeling "full."  Nuts are good to snack on, too.  Protein will give you the energy you need.  Fruit and veggies will give you the vitamins you need.  Be sure to take vitamins, if you don't already.  Vitamin C and a B complex is good (or a multi vitamin) and will help you recover and get your energy back.

I hope you feel better!

Haha! Its actually the closest sit-down place to my apartment ...

Erm, should I mention that on a forum?

LaTigresse -> RE: Loss of Appetite (3/4/2008 2:53:39 PM)

Melt all you want, but eat girl!

If you don't you might get sick again and you don't want that.

psssssst...... ice cream is always good.....

bleusparkles -> RE: Loss of Appetite (3/4/2008 2:55:52 PM)

I am sipping a cuppa soup thingie right now.

Ice cream ... Hmm.

I love it when Dommes tell me I'm adorable. I'm going to save the quote where you said it. Cause it makes me grin.

dollparts85 -> RE: Loss of Appetite (3/4/2008 3:04:17 PM)

That happens when you don't eat much for a while...depending on how many carbs you were taking in, your body may have gone into ketosis which will decrease your appetite A LOT...you just gotta force yourself to eat and eventually your appetite will come back. I'd suggest trying to get your protein intake up, should help with the energy. Try to aim for a good 35 g at least per day and you may want to try a B complex vitamin suppliment at least until you're eating normally again.

LaTigresse -> RE: Loss of Appetite (3/4/2008 3:10:04 PM)

Well you are adorable.......so there.

dollparts85 -> RE: Loss of Appetite (3/4/2008 3:21:36 PM)

Also, if you haven't been drinking 2 liters of water a day, you may be dehydrated which can result in electolyte imbalance, so you may want to try drinking a sports drink or something...pedalite (sp?) would be a good choice as well.

bleusparkles -> RE: Loss of Appetite (3/4/2008 5:08:51 PM)

I've been downing health drinks and smoothies by Naked Fruit. (I originally got it 'cause I thought it sounded kinky.)

Its funny because I've been wanting something that would jumpstart me losing weight again but this wasn't quite what I had in mind.

dollparts85 -> RE: Loss of Appetite (3/4/2008 5:51:10 PM)

Not eating much results in loss of muscle mass...which is not good...you want to lose fat...not muscle...muscle burns calories and therefore burns fat...you need to keep your calories and protein intake up.

DesFIP -> RE: Loss of Appetite (3/4/2008 5:54:43 PM)

Your appetite will recover in a week or two. In the meantime, more soup, smoothies, yogurts, ice cream. It's easier to swallow drinks than to eat.
