Now the question is, should these lawsuits be allowed to proceed, or should any company that may have helped save American lives be thanked for performing a patriotic service; should those who stepped forward to say we’re going to help defend America have to go to the courthouse to defend themselves, or should the Congress and the President say thank you for doing your patriotic duty? I believe we ought to say thank you.

Funny thing about civil rights: they're not to be violated except by due process of law. That's Bush effectively admitting that he and the telecoms violated the rights of Americans without due process of law - that he knowingly, not only did not defend the Constitution, but brazenly defied it's protections.

And, of course, they keep on doing it from a special room in San Francisco.

I agree with every word in the GWB video. These are dangerous times and effective counter terrorist measures are necessary.
Who is it that is deciding to sue the telecomms companies ?

I think they should be allowed to proceed.  Leave it up to the court to decide whether the Dipshit In Chief and his posse were within their legal right to have access to that information, whether ATT et al were allowed by law to provide it, and whether Qwest communications was correct in refusing to provide the information to the Bush administration's people without a court order.

It is not so much that I care whether Bush and his cronies do Time In The Big House, but I want future administrations to look back and see that the American people have a limit to how many crooked shenanigans they will put up with.

here is something more scary... he claims... oh it was to protect the people after 9/11.... to hunt down terrorists.. out of one side of his mouth.. and then also out of the other.. he didnt realize how bad things were Clinton never told him or made it out to be that bad before 9/11 so it wasnt that big of a deal.... right?

Scary, disgusting stuff indeed and probably only the tip of the proverbial iceberg.  Understand you could be "surveilled" at any given time, you no longer have any expectation of privacy (especially on your computer) and any and all records/paper trails you create could be being looked at at any time.  Throw in the main concept of this book (that snitches are everywhere and unscrupulous to boot) and it's some scary stuff.  But, as we're so often told by government and law enforcement: "If you're doing nothing 'wrong,' you have nothing to fear."  Right?  Right? The way I see it is that although these are extrodinary times which require a political aproach that is different from the traditional aproaches I feel that there is a cost for freedom and first and formost is the cost of taking risks in order to preserve that freedom.  I understand why the Gov. has done what it has done however I also feel that they had no right to take those freedoms away without asking our permision. The Gov. is suppose to be an organization that was put into place in order to serve us and only exists because this is what we as a people allow. When anyone within this process decides that the boundries can be changed without the permition of those that they serve then they are acting outside what was put in effect.  In that case the people have a right to know why the boundries of right and wrong were pushed and the only way to do that is through the justice system where the evidence can be reviewed with a public eye and judgement made by the people as to wether or not there was any wrong doing. The fact that there was and is risks to national security is still for the people to weigh in not for the government to decide. I relise that this all rainbow flowery in a perfect world kind of viewpoint however I feel in the information age there is no justification for the amount of power that the Federal Gov. holds. We as a people are lazy for allowing all this to take place.

Gwynvyd, I don't like George Bush either but I wouldn't be using Madeleine Albright of all people to shoot him down with.
She was probably the worst secy of state this country has ever had.

...DSL has been SLOW these days.    $31.88  a month, not counting satilite, landline or wireless.    I think I over "thanked" them already.
