Doesn't that start before puberty... like making prank phone calls and disguising your squeaky voice or being silent? It's attention seeking in it's simplest form. Many species use more than one cammoflage scheme to 'blend in' and get closer to their prey. If the chameleon fears being seen by predator or prey, they will change color to ensure their success, or survival. It's about satisfying or feeding a need, perceived or real. If the predator does not acheive results, they will change their spots as is possible to re-engage their prey. Men get input from gay men disguised as females... it's everywhere for certain. Human ones doing same seem to be adept at whittling little peep holes in bathroom walls, have you noticed any of those? (leave the paper tucked in them, lol) Inyouagain
