What's the big deal?

You said it, mate.

Glad we can agree. Let the women excercise with everyone else and end sexual segregation. [:)]

If it pleases you to get the last word in such a puerile way, I'll gladly let you have it [:)].

I think the next addition needs to be a men's only exercise time.

Argh! I made that point about three times already! Argh.

As did I in My original post to this thread.
I really have no problem with "women's hours" and "men's hours".  I also pointed out that there could be additional reasons why this could be a good thing.  I objected to the fact that the it was "Muslim" women was pointed out in the article.  There are many reasons why having gender specific times could be a nice things for many.  kittenSol is right.  There are many public pools who have "Ladies" water areobics classes, "Men's" classes, and even special times for the elderly.
Thank the media (and the university administration for even discussing this as the reason in the first place) for, once again, bringing up the potential for inflamation.  The only reason people are having a problem  with this is because this was set up for religious and cultural reasons, rather than the more practical reasons showing that this could be a nice option for many beyond that religion or culture.
*shrug*

And if it pleases you to once again attack with barbed comments, I guess I will leave that to you. I understand it's what happens when logic leaves you, so by all means, have at it. Call me jeuvenile again. I don't care.

Actually I would have objected regardless. It goes back to a previous thread about equality and how women cry for it, but only when it suits them. You want to be equal? Then BE EQUAL....stop crying for your own *special* gym times and get in their and work out and then go home. Stop making problems where none existed before. How many generations of students had zero problems working out together? And now suddenly it's a problem. Sheeeesh.

Well, ,I for one, have never stated that I want to be equal.  I already know I am better.  [;)]
I go after what I want and need based on the reasonable wants and needs and My ability to make a case that this is reasonable.  So that argument is lost on Me.
Object away!  I makes no difference to Me.  I only pointed out that this is all up for discussion because it got press.  And I don't think it was worthy of the press space in the first place.  And it only got the press because it was about the "Muslim" woman.
But let's keep on being divisive (instead of mutually respectful) in the name of forcing all to be "equal" and "together" in all things.  It makes things much more interesting, doesn't it?

Actually, I just find it amusing to watch a certain group cry over inequality all the time only to turn around and want special dispensation later. It cracks me up as a constant source of amusement and evidence to me that *I* am better because I just don't give a fuck. I live my life and I don't bow to others' whims.

Because although I don't give a fuck, I also will not censor myself to cater to others' sensitivities.

Vendaval -> RE: Harvard gym tests Muslim women only hours (3/6/2008 2:13:12 PM)

Many people, both females and males, would not want to work out in front of a group of reporters or have cameras and microphones shoved in their faces when they want to go exercise and work up a good sweat.

quote:

ORIGINAL: Smith117

If you continue to read that article more carefully, you'll notice that even with the new hours, the gym is vacant. Reporters waited outside at the prescribed times and no one came in or left.

Cops-outs aside, if the facilities aren't being used, the hours should be given back to the general public so they can use the gym. If the issue is important enough to make a school segregate an entire gender, a couple of cameras shouldn't matter. The article said "a reporter" not a camera anyway. And they were "outside" not in the gym.

Vendaval -> RE: Harvard gym tests Muslim women only hours (3/6/2008 2:21:56 PM)

I have been thinking the same thing.  Some sports on campus are gender specific and some are co-ed.  And the public park and recreational facilities have senior exercise classes and classes for the disabled.

kittinSol -> RE: Harvard gym tests Muslim women only hours (3/6/2008 2:22:15 PM)

The gym in question belongs to Harvard University . The general public does not have access to it. The university's authorities decided to allocate a few hours a week for women-only sessions and you'll find it is their right to do so since there is a demand for it.

Alright everyone, raise your hands if you think by "general public" I meant those who don't attend the school? Anyone? Anyone?

kitten, if that's the only thing in my posts you can logically argue, you've already failed.

Vendaval -> RE: Harvard gym tests Muslim women only hours (3/6/2008 2:30:21 PM)

You are not making sense here.

What are you referring to as a cop-out?

Harvard is a private institution, not a public facility.

An entire gender is not be segregated at all the gyms on the campus either or even during the entire hours of operation at one facility.

The women only hours are 6 hours a week out of 70, at one of the least used gyms on the campus

If the Muslim women are requesting privacy to maintain modesty,
would it not also make sense that they would not wish to exercise
in front of a camera, microphone and reporter?

I'm making perfect sense. You just have to listen (read). The cop-out is the answer you gave about them not wanting to work out in front of a camera. As I've pointed out, the article said *a reporter* hung out near the entrance, not a camera crew. Also, if the reporter isn't allowed *inside* the gym, then the women are able to work out in privacy. Are you now going to tell me that we have to block off the area in front of the gym to respect their 'modesty' because they can't work out with a reporter outside? Because that's ridiculous.

Vendaval -> RE: Harvard gym tests Muslim women only hours (3/6/2008 2:49:26 PM)

I am reading your posts carefully and your reasoning still makes no sense to me.

The article states that the reporter "went to the gym on a Monday", and shows a photograph of the gym entrance.  It does not state if the reporter was inside, outside or both.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23470304/

And your suppositions about what I might say are of your own imagination.

You're right, it doesn't. So therefore to *assume* that the reporter was *inside* is a bit premature, don't you think? I notice it also doesn't say if it was a male or female reporter either.

Cute, though I didn't make a supposition, I asked a question, hence the words "are you" at the beginning.

Vendaval -> RE: Harvard gym tests Muslim women only hours (3/6/2008 3:02:02 PM)

I never stated that the reporter was inside the gym.
The visibility of the gym interior as a whole is not discussed, diagramed or photographed in this article.

And your suppositions are as follows:

"Are you now going to tell me that we have to block off the area in front of the gym to respect their 'modesty' because they can't work out with a reporter outside? Because that's ridiculous."
