The president is ELECTED through the electoral college. He is not appointed. The reason why he is elected in this fashion is because the founding fathers believed that the average voter is an idiot. And they are right. Just look at the latest Obama-craze. You ask an Obama supporter why they like him and 9 out of 10 will say, "Uh....I like how he talks...." It's not wonder how dictators like Hugo Chavez and Putin get elected...

The reason we have the Electoral College is to keep the massive population centers from imposing their will on the rest of the country, unrestrained. It's just as valid and relevant today as when the Founders worked it out. It's the same reason every state gets two votes in the Senate. People's priorities are different. Our present system mandates that you address the concerns and values of more than just the big cities. Here is a map that might help illustrate. This was a close election, but the heartland won. Rather than trying to figure out why their message doesn't work in the middle, the Dems try to figure out what's wrong with Kansas.

I am with Rich at the 100% level, that is what it is, that is why, there was no jerrymandering in those days, no spin, politics was not sound bites, wasn't looked on as a way to fuck a segment of the population over......... There was a time when high thoughts were thought, the only thing considered was how it should be when good was good and right was right, and the constitution and the election process and politics as a whole as it was thought of in those days, assumed that people wanted to serve, to have and hold altruistic motives for the good of our country, to do the right thing and to be fair and square in all their dealings, and of course it is all quite naieve. Is it true that the president is appointed by the electors? No he/she is elected by the elctors. Is it true that the electors are appointed by the legislature? No, each state gets to decide the method of allocating thier electors Is it true that there is no law that requires the electors to appoint the person who gets the most votes. Depends on the State Is it true that the electors have appointed,on more than one occasion, someone to the presidency that did not receive the majority of the popular vote? Nope, they elected someone who did. Bush in 2000, Clinton in 92 &96 (the Majority voted for someone other than Clinton, he won with 38% &46% of the vote), and a few other times going back in history I would therefore submit that the president is appointed and not elected. You can make up silly terminology all day if you like. But if you want to change the Constitution, better get cracking on it. The electoral colledge (and choosing of the President by weighted voting) is one of the bedrocks of our Federal Republic. Otherwise you are just demanding to throw away the Constitution

Really...I thought the reason that each state got two votes in the Senate was so that each state had an equal voice in the government. And that the House of Representatives was based on population so that the populace would have an equal voice in the government. So just how does that address the Electoral College?
