Absolutely, just because I'm the helpful type.

So, ok.  I went to look up the definition of shit.  Seems to me that a LOT of people have been using it in the various ways that it is listed on the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary.  Care to share with me another way we oh so silly people have been misusing it?

No offense taken whatsoever.  The answer was meant a bit tongue and cheek.

tsatske -> RE: Straight males and the word "boi" (3/7/2008 12:41:47 PM)

I have a former master who is strait, and also clueless. His email name screenname is a variant of 'BearGuy'. If he puts up his pic with any given profile, you will see that he is 800 lbs with hair half way down his back and a hair covered body, although smooth shaven.
And then he would wonder why Gay guys keep writing him? yea, I wonder....[&:]

darchChylde -> RE: Straight males and the word "boi" (3/7/2008 1:08:53 PM)

Hmmm, whatever the meaning, i've never liked it the few times i was referred to as "boi" online (i always equated it to sk8erboi and the skate rats i used to hate).  But then again, i don't like being called "boy" either; unless by Ma'am, who doesn't often do so.  Strangely enough, i often refer to myself as a "subbie boy".

But as far as people using it, the internet spawned the instant gratification society where people seldom do ten seconds of research into any given subject (yes, it took me about that long to google "boi" and come up with the very wikipedia page that you sourced; top of the list).  In a perfect world, people will stop using whose meaning they don't know; but we don't live in that world, so we'll have fun griping and debating.

Tavian -> RE: Straight males and the word "boi" (3/7/2008 1:10:47 PM)

I'm not going to be political here at all. My first thought was "who the heck cares?" Now my thought is this: The definitions of words are constantly changing. Get over it. So the lesbian community lost it's monopoly over the use of the word "boi".. Cry me a river. Please go find something more important to complain about..this has already taken up too much bandwidth.

And you thought that just because you said so it would stop the thread?  That's a waste of bandwidth in itself, and incredibly arrogant to go into a thread and start dictating.  Get over yourself, why post in a thread if you don't have the slightest constructive imput to offer?

Edited because i saw an error on my part: Oops, i forgot what section i was in; still, the rest of the post stands.

tigerstyle -> RE: Straight males and the word "boi" (3/7/2008 1:28:17 PM)

The defense of the original sense of a term is just as much a part of the evolution of language as the appropriation of that term by another subculture.

They said it best in the FAQ section of begthequestion.info  :
Q:But language is constantly evolving!
A: That's great to know! Descriptivist linguists, whom we do not fault for their stand, are quite free to watch as we bring about an evolution in the vernacular understanding of "begging the question." [substitute "boi"].

LadyPact -> RE: Straight males and the word "boi" (3/7/2008 1:35:49 PM)

No, as you recognized (or I thought you did) it was funny.  Btw, happen to notice how many of the definitions were slang?

As to wasting bandwidth, I'd really like to know what one considers a waste?  It seems that a lot of people got some information in this thread, whether they agreed with it or not.  Seems a lot more valuable to Me than the some of the other things that come up around here.  I'll bet a lot of people thought someone asking what topping from the bottom meant was a waste of space, especially those who have been around more than thirty days.

I agree with dc.  Get over yourself.

KyttynTheMynx -> RE: Straight males and the word "boi" (3/7/2008 1:38:15 PM)

Take it as you want, but a few pages back, YOU were the one that stated that most people dont use the word shit properly.  I was merely pointing out that from the definitions that I, and you have shown, people generally use it right.  Are we all up to speed now?  Good.  Moving on.

Madame4a -> RE: Straight males and the word "boi" (3/7/2008 1:41:45 PM)

wow... interesting coming from you and your posts all over these boards the last few days...I'm going to guess, one or two of us found your posts a waste of bandwith since half of what you asked about could be found in several places with just the slightest bit of effort...but I didn't bother to say that.. it wasn't nice...

silly me...

Except we haven't proven that the lesbian version *is* the original sense of the term/usage of boi, it hasn't yet been formally accepted into the language.

boi is a neologism:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neologism

Here's the wikipedia discussion from when they debated deleting the entry:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Boi_(gender)

I did some *very basic and by no means binding* hunting around online and found dated references for boi as a lesbian term back to 2004, and for emo (and goth) usage of the word back to 2000.  Avril  Lavigne's sk8ter boi song was 2002.  Now those dates don't mean much of anything other than to indicate there have been multiple usages of the word for the short duration of its lifespan.  Sorry, but it has multiple meanings although they all revolve around a common root word: boy.

beargonewild -> RE: Straight males and the word "boi" (3/7/2008 1:59:36 PM)

It may not be proven that the lesbian version is right or wrong. Yet the majority in the lesbian community do use boi/gyrl/womyn/gurl in every day comversations. Granted they probably were altered to fit their sense of community and difference from the gay population. In a similar  manner the gay males adopted "boy" to indicate a young bear or cib, any young gay male unlike a twink, or in a Daddy/son dynamoic where the son is often referred to as "my boy."  Mind you, there are other examples and I'm just listing a few.
Language does change and evolve over time and the alteration of it's usage in our language. Much in the same way, many slang terms gradually make it into mainstream dictionaries and are thusly accepted as part of modern language.

Madame4a -> RE: Straight males and the word "boi" (3/7/2008 2:00:41 PM)

I'll report I've been a leather dyke for a lot longer than 2004.. and suggest that the word boi was used as boijen has stated at least since 1995

MsKittyBlack -> RE: Straight males and the word "boi" (3/7/2008 2:12:48 PM)

If not before hand. While, often in major cities, it's found that the gay male and lesbian crowds don't mix (that's changing) there was an adaptation as more lesbians got more out about being into this BDSM thing we do. That adaptation now looks like "Syr/boi" and some other words listed...as someone once said "in immitation of the Sir/Daddy/boy" relationships often found within the gay male community.

MsKitty's boijen

edited because I'm dumb and don't check the default when logging in
