GADomCpl -> BDSM and Religion (9/24/2005 10:00:27 AM)

I grew up in a very Christian home and still hold my religion as one of the most important things in my life. One of the biggest issues I have had with exploring the BDSM lifestyle has been between what I enjoy in my life and what is right in my religious beliefs. I'm just curious how many people on this site consider themselves Christian and if so how do you see your lifestyle affecting your religion?

I'm Christian.

I don't see Jesus saying anything most sexual stuff.

So, as long as its consensual and I'm being honest and I care, well, I personally consider that living as Jesus would.

If you do a search for the phrase Chrisitianity then there various threads on the subject.
Here are a few to help.

Ds lifestyle and religion.

BDSM and spritiuality

Christianity and DS BDSM

BDSM lifestyle VS Christianity/Religion

spirit or soul

I believe in God, Jesus and the holy spirit. It makes me a christian by some peoples assumptions. I am not concerned about that - only what God knows of me. BDSM and chrisitianity can exist together - or apart - for myself it is together, and it is a thing of beauty.

Peace and Love

Buddhist here - but I have seen a LOT of Christians online who are into BDSM, and I personally see no problem with that.

Shamanic healer/energy worker in training here. It isn't just Christians who have to question their BDSM lifestyle. As a student of Shamans, I have to be open with them about my lifestyle and explain how that is acceptable under the moral and ethical value systems of a shamanic healer. It has been difficult as the teachers have no experience of the lifestyle other than the slanted media viewpoint.

I live my D/s life by the morals, values and ethics of shamanic spirituality, it is not the right path for others, but it works for me.

There are Christian BDSM clubs and some very religious people within the scene.

First, let me say that I am a Christian and take my faith and spirituality seriously.

Next. let me say that I NEVER confuse religion (man made rules and dogma) with faith and spirtuality (one's personal walk with their Higher Power as they have come to understand Him/Her/It/Them...)

And then let me say that frankly, after studying the Bible many an hour and in thoughtful prayer and contemplation I came to several conclusions.

1) God and Jesus really don't have anything against D/s, MS, sadism or masochism. What really yanks their collective chain are things like lying, cheating, stealing, jealousy, pride, etc. Seriously. Consider Solomon, David, Saul... the great Kings of Israel. Hundreds of wives, concubines, slaves.... Did poly and sex lead to their falls from favor? No. Jealousy did. Envy. Pride. God was okay with the sex and lots of partners thing.

2) Paul had issues, including homophobia. Almost all of the anti-sex stuff we find in the Bible was written by Paul. He expected Christ to return TODAY, every day, to establish His kingdom on Earth. ANYTHING that would be a distraction for getting ready for Christ's return, Paul viewed with anathema. This included sex, marriage, and having children. He only very relutctantly agreed to marriage as way to keep from "sinning" but he always preached celibacy as the desired course of action. Sad man.

3) Ephesians 6:5-8 - Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is upon you, but like slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free. (NIV)

4) Eph 6:9 - And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him. (NIV)

5) Tit 2:9-10 - Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them, and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will the teaching about God our Savious attractive. (NIV)

The New Testament specifically recognizes master/slave relationships and addresses them in these and other passages. REAL owners and slaves, not the kind that were about it consensually or for fun, but those who were born into it, or bought and sold in it, or captured and forced into slavery, were normal in Christ's time and His teachings reflect that.

The need for discipline, leadership, integrity, honesty, mercy, compassion, celebration, meeting the needs of spouses, partners, slaves... all these and more are addressed within the context of the Bible and our Christian faith. Do NOT confuse the dogma of the various religions with Gods word and teaching. Read, study, and integrate it into your heart on your own and come to a fuller understanding of yourself. May you find peace within yourself as I have, as you continue your journey of discovery and growth.

Yours In Christian Kink,
- Geoff

Great post, and I particularly liked the way you framed Paul contextually rather than simply caricatured or dismissed him.

My two cents would be that as I understand God, his concern is wholy and solely on relationships: the I-Thou relationship we have with him, and we have with each other. In that context, "sin" means things that drive us apart; moral codes like the Ten Commandments are clear instruction sets that aim towards codifying that relationship principle. One of my favorite passages from Matthew reads:

quote:

Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question:
"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?"
Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

I'll go one farther: I not only see no conflict between my faith and my M/s relationship with my fiance - it creates further and deper intimacy with her. It is a positive, moral, love action that makes us able to come together in unity.

You will find MANY people on this site that are active in their churches & religious community. If you look at the teachings of Promise Keepers & the like it's power exchange at it's finest...though as a Domme the logic makes me ill. The woman submits unto her husand ALL decisions are made by the man. He is the leader & provider of the household & his decisions are final without arguement in all things...sounds like a Dom to me [:-]
