Try looking here ,  http://dpreview.com/ , there are some very good write ups and reviews.

You can't really go wrong with a nikon or a cannon.  Here is an off the wall suggestion, look around for a used Pentax istDS.  You can find them in great shape pretty cheap, you just might have to do some digging.  It was actually a pretty good little camera that of course didn't sell because it wasn't a nikon or cannon.  The pluses are you should be able to find one and a couple of Pentax lenses cheap.  The JPEGs it takes are pretty average, but it does take excellent RAW images (sony sensor).  Even when you get a better camera later its the kind of thing you can keep around and take chances with because you got it cheap it doesn't matter if it should get smashed.  Down side, its not a cannon or nikon nad is not as refined in some menus and touches.

If you do a lot of indoor shooitng save your coins while your learning.  When you ge them all added together invest in a full frame camera.  I dio a lot of stuff in tight coners sometimes and having an 18mm turned into a 28mm just tanks everything.

Read and try is always your best bet.

Very good for you, but beware shop assistants, they being salepeople keen to make a sale. Make sure you handle the tool,(not theirs), find what is comfortable to you and your access to basic controls. It really matters not what make, as long as the weapon of choice holds well and can be operated like second nature.

It is not the camera that gets the best pic but the photographer, a camera only aids, the more the automation the less control to a point where lazy as we are we let a computer do the job, our creativity is reduced to subject matter and pushing a button.

It all depends on what sort of photographer you aim to be. be creative, make mistakes and learn or be snap happy, good shots, but not a clue of what went on.

Good luck, and enjoy your creativity.

(me, 25 years of photography, LRPS, started on a box brownie, roll film, then konica auto ,konica manual, pentax mx, yashica TLR and now Nikon d70)

Ask the teacher what the requirements are first. You don't want to get too much camera or waste money on lenses you won't be using for six months.
