ORIGINAL: TheHungryTiger But to the people who have convinced themselves that we live in a puriticinal society none of this matters. They have already made up their mind that kink is looked down on and we in the comunity are downtroden and picked on. Nothing at all could ever change this. I could quite easily list off just as many instances for gay as I did kink. Brokback moutian came out and there was not huge protests in the streets with thousands of angry right wing christians holding picket sighns. The worse that came from it is that some of the more oddball groups issued press statements. OH! Not press statements! Anything but press statements! ..... Yet evey newspaper went ahead and reacted as if homosecuality was oppresed anyway. "Is amarica ready for a film like this? Are those ignorant inbread backwood hicks who love in the red states goiing to be open minded enough to finaly see the light?'. The christrian right didnt opress the film despite holowoods desperate desire for them to opress so that they can point fingers and say 'see, we still arnt accepted'. Heck, even the director Ang Lee was quoted in an interview and asked what he thought abotu the near lack of any protest againt the film and he said 'oh, those evil right wingers are so crafty. They stayed quiet on purpose because they didnt want to give us any free publicity. Thats how evil these right wingers are!" I think there is some genuine concern that ultra-right wing conservative christian organisations are getting far too much of a hearing within government in the UK ans US. I personally believe 99.9% of the population treat people like that as idiots. The trouble is we have governments that seem to be more interested in keeping newspaper editors happy, that legislating in a consensual and positive way. There has been a big stink over here over the plans to reduce the time limit on abortions. The house of commons were given a free vote and the MP's voted with their own consciences, the motion was defeated as a result. We saw on a TV documentary made about the campaigning up to the vote. There were a group of people I would describe as religious fanatics, christians to boot who are fundamentally against abortion clearly pulling the strings of several members of parliament. I for one believe in choice and freedom for all, but if these sort of people start getting too much influence then the conspircay theorists will be proven right! Gay rights is almost old hat. I suspect that if you go out in red neck country you will get the "kill the queers" brigade, as you will in many areas of the UK. However, in terms of acceptance we are a good 20 years behind the Gay Rights Movement. May be we should stand back, see what they've achieved and how they achieved it. Then take their successes as a lead and follow it? I can only see positive results from it. Whilst we are still being pilloried by the news media, especially the gutter press who are only interested in selling their rags, then your average member of the public will still look down their noses in disdain in public. On private they'll probably get the gimp suitas out & parade around the bedroom! lol That is unfortunately is the nature of the beast, and if we can encourage more celebrities to come out into the open then they will be more acceptance.
