Can anyone tell me what it means when a contract has a player option or a club option in it?

Lets say it is a 5 year contract..... 4 years guaranteed with an option year.
If the player holds the option He can decide whether or not to return for the 5th year.
If the club holds the option, they get to decide whether he returns at the original contract salary  or not.

A player option is when the player has the ability to extend the contract at a fixed salary.  A club option, or team option, is when the team has the ability to extend the contract at a fixed salary.

Some contracts contain both.

Generally, players receive higher compensation on a team option than on a player option.

Edited to add:  The price of the salary on the option does not have to be the same as the original contract years, although it is almost always a fixed number. The player option will almost always be a lower number than the team option.

seeing the name of the OP got this song stuck in my head, thought I would share...

Im the man in the box
Buried in my shit
Wont you come and save me, save me

Chorus
Feed my eyes, can you sew them shut?
Jesus christ, deny your maker
He who tries, will be wasted
Feed my eyes now youve sewn them shut

Im the dog who gets beat
Shove my nose in shit
Wont you come and save me, save me

Chorus
