Racism has many definitions, the most common and widely accepted being that members of one race consider themselves intrinsically superior to members of other races.(from wikipedia)

I hear someone in The US has made a comment on Obamas campaign, and been labelled racist.

What is it about this word that seems to be complete anethema to everyone, no one wants the label, which seems so easily given. It does seem to me that once the label of racist has been applied to someone, they are destroyed, something which I feel hinders proper debate, understanding and action for all concerned.

The word seems so easily given, even in places where there is no real racism, just someone who feels the word has a good effect, a be all, stop all.And it does have the effect to stop all, why?

Why should one word be something which may hinder a better understanding between all races, races which are made up of people?

I think people are very touchy about any thing with Obama. If any one doubts him.. questions or even looks at him funny it is written up as "an Attack" if he say things or has questions or doubts.. or if any one has questions or doubts about his running mate it is "an concern"

Welcome to American politics.. where the canidates are hand picked.... and press is bought and sold.

After all we know Clinton is a "Monster" and Obama is just a Brother trying to Rise above and tell us We Can.

No, yanno what? I think that if anyone who is white says anything negative about someone of another race, or if we even bring up the fact that they are another race...then we are racists.
Of course, people who are white should of course be ridiculed and called names because, uhm...we are white.
The lady had a valid point. This man has no experience, and really not much to recommend him to the highest office of the land.
I frikken HATE white supremecists and think they should all be shot first and then let God sort 'em out, but, we all need to learn to have conversations as adults.
If someone's sex or gender makes it easier for them to do whatever it is they aspire to, why shouldn't we be able to talk about it?
I really liked that this woman made a valid point, and was woman enough to explain what she said, the context in which she said it, and to stand by her remarks.
There should be more who can do this, no matter what their beliefs.

Aneirin, It probably has to do with "political correctness."
And, when some people are losing an argument they tend to try to label the other person, "racist". Very weak.
The best thing to do is avoid people who engage in that type of underhanded behavior. Or, if in person and no-one's looking, cold cock them and knock them out.
People like that are in desperate need of, "a significant emotional experience."

So far, my thanks to you all for posting entirely relevant thoughts, I was wondering if the title of this post had had an effect as to keep people away, you know, the dreaded word.

Unfortunately, the term "Racist" really has become something of a bludgeon for the "Politically Correct"... It's like, once anyone is declared a racist, all discourse stops until they apologize for what they said. It does hinder discussion. It's also devalued the term, since it became so powerful due to the supremacists and hate groups it applied to, but can now be freely used any time anyone so much as hints at a difference between people that seems linked to race. So, it'll come back 'round again.

From the article referenced "Geraldine Ferraro refused to retract her remarks that "if Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position""

How many time have you heard a black say.."They wouldn't be where they are if it weren't for them being white"

I wonder when Chris Rock is going to be forced to take "sensitivity training" for his slures and insults to whites and women?

Except that of course, the notion that this is just about words, is a smokescreen. It is about power over others.

It wasn't merely words that kept black people in chains and made Europeans wealthy selling slaves to Brazil, Jamaica, etc.... it was guns and chains.

It wasn't words that kept black people from voting under Jim Crow, or from being legally human under terra nullius...it was guns and handcuffs.

It wasn't just words that kept Chinese people from testifying against any white person in courts... it was guns and badges.

And it wasn't words that fattened British coffers in forced opium trade, it was guns and gunboats.

It wasn't words that kept apartheid going... it was guns and sjamboks.

Once minorities learned how to shoot back, then suddenly the oppressors wanted to play 'civilized' word games.

And now that minorities have learned the use of the court system, of media influence over public opinion, and of economic leverage, the fading status quo wants to make it a baaaaaaad thing to point out racism, even when it is real.
Hence the game played by Stormfront, David Dukes, Geraldine Ferrarro, and several of the serial hate posters here, of yelling 'race card' whether it is true or not.

I meant not for this topic to be about what is happening in the US, but use of the word in general, as it is used in every country, particularly the western world.

True, what happened in the US regarding Obama inspired me , but I thought the dreaded R word needs discussing

Australia, Rhodesia, Britain, Jamaica, and China weren't in the US.... and in Uganda, the black people accuse those of Pakistani descent of being uppity and playing the race card.

It is the old trick of burying the minority up to his neck and setting dogs on him, and then when he bites one of the dogs. screaming 'fight fair keffir/abo/wog/boy'.

Pretending that there is something innately wrong with pointing out racism, is part of the new covert racism. Racism hasn't gone away, it has just bought a latte at Starbucks, and switched to code...

Does that mean we can't "celebrate diversity" anymore?
One time a few years ago a lefty called me a KKK person or "sympathiser" or whatever because I think our govt. under Bush is derelict in it's duties for not arresting and deporting illegal aliens like they should have been doing all along.
But, the initials "KKK" also stand for "Koons, Kikes, and Katholics."
Since I was born and brought up "Katholic" I pointed out the error of his logic to him to no avail. He was just too fuckin' ignorant and didn't know his history and couldn't understand why I would'nt want to be associated with an organisation that hated a group that I was a part of.
That's the ignorance that you have to deal with from "uninformed" (read FUCKIN STUPID) people who go around calling people "racists" because they don't believe the way that (they) do.
And when you ask these people to name the three races they come out with stuff like; "Chinese? African? White?"
I think once a couple of those bozos gets sued for calling people "racists" when they're not we may see some changes.
I'm absolutely amazed at the blatent ignorance of some people who are walking around with college (ahem) "degrees" these days.
I'm surprised that parents aren't pounding on college and universities' president's doors demanding their money back for their children's "education" that they never got!

If anyone tries to pull that "racist" crap in here we should ostracize them!

Accusing people of prejustices they don't have is a prejustice in and of itself.  It's also quite a stupid distraction from the issues.

I can't tell you how many times kittenSol's called me sexist for not liking Hillary and being pro-life; she's used it to try to shut people who disagree with her on these subjects up.  And she's hardly alone.  If someone thinks something will work when nothing else does.. well, many people aren't above using it.

Personally, I think Obama's getting my vote.  But if he's not getting yours because you happen to disagree with his political stance or like someone else's more?  Naw, nothing racist about that.  There's something racist, though, about people if they think that they should vote for him just because he's half black!

CL, besides being a "stupid distraction" it's also the act of a coward.
A lot of years ago there was a senator from Minnisotta named Joe McCarthy.
He didn't use the word "racist" he used the word "communist" to silence his opponents.
He ruined carreers, families, people.
Like I said, some people don't know their history.

The accusation of racism is almost invariably used to limit debate just as was the use of the word communist.
I note Alumbrado misses out the part played by the African "kings" in the slave trade. Does saying that make me a racist?
McCarthy came from Wisconsin I believe.
