Hauptmann -> honorary title for public (3/13/2008 8:40:16 AM)

Just a quick question. My little one has no problems calling me Master etc in private, but outdoors in public she feels that it puts her in too much of an open position for something that really is quite a private arrangement. Likewise Sir, Papa, Lord. It just doesn't feel all that sexy to feel silly, and she would.

Humiliated, yes. subservient, yes, silly no. (and this is not a comment on those who use those terms in public, it just doesn't feel right for us).

I was wondering, does anyone have a suggestion I could use, perhaps from your own experience?
Maybe there is a foreign language word that would mean the same but wouldn't open her to ridicule?

Sorry if this is a silly question!

Translate Papa, Sir, Master and any other title you commonly use into several other languages (online translators arent hard to find) and see which ones you like the sound of. Think of it as nothing more than a public-friendly pet name so it sould be something that sounds good in conversation, and use it at home at first. Then, itl be second nature, you'll have a new nick name in public that everyone can think is a sweet pet name, and she can continue to use a title as you would like.

if there is enough of an age difference, around here anyway Sir wouldn't give you too many funny looks. just tell people she came from a military household (that's what i do). or if you grant her the permission use your formal name (as in daniel and not dan or whatever). it gives a lot more protocol/formality than a pet name. just a thought.

You could use something like "dear", as in Yes, dear.  The two of you would know that it means something special, and outsiders would see it as a sign of respect and affection but nothing more.

Yup, this one works for me too. I use "my love" or "my dearest"

I called my ex "Daddy" at the restaurant once. Totally not thihnking about where we were, just said it. He thought it was great. the waitress paused but never said anything.

I'm the type who doesn't really care what others think.  I'll call Her "Mistress" in public and not think twice about it.  I'm comfortable with that and so is She.  I'll also call Her babygirl, babydoll, baby, or even my Jigglypuff.   LOL

kyraofMists -> RE: honorary title for public (3/13/2008 10:32:37 AM)

I think she is overestimating how much people in public, who do not know you, pay attention to what you say if you are not talking to them.  If we are out in public and people we don't know are there we often use 'my Lord' and people do not notice.  However, in front of people who do know us but do not know the details of our relationship he is 'my Love'.

Funny, i almost never use my Master's given name, not for any reasons of BDSM, it's a southern thing i guess. where most of my family is, you just call people; "sweetie", "sugar," or "love". Saves face when you don't remember your aunt's stepson's friend's name, who's dog had puppies the night the power went out. Either of us say "my love," in public and private. At home we use titles that are a little more fun, but no one has ever gave us a funny look for saying "my love". i think the idea about using another language sounds romantic.

ownedgirlie -> RE: honorary title for public (3/13/2008 11:24:03 AM)

Sometimes he'll have me call him Master anyway, depending on circumstances.  If it's a situation that is inappropriate for that, he is "Love", "Darling" or "Mr. Wonderful".  My mother and friends all call him Mr. Wonderful. :)

I have used 'Sir' in public, around strangers - in a bank, or something like that. How do they know that I am with my romantic partner, and not my boss?
This is really the first long term relationship I have had with a man, in my adult life, who was not significantly older than me. For that reason, I have never been able to do the 'Daddy' in public, as I already have spent too much time growling at service people through gritted teeth 'He is NOT my father!' I used to call my first husband, who was 38 years my senior, and whom I married a week after my 18th birthday, 'Daddy', when in public with the children (we were vanilla, but, you know, you call your partner what you want your children to call them, while your children are tots, and when talking too, through, for or around the Uhms). I would get very upset when people would respond to my telling my two year old, 'Go find Daddy' by saying to me, Your father just stepped outside. He is HIS father, not MINE! LOL (I have mellowed considerably in my old age.)
And, yes, for those of you following the saga of my life - at 18 I was living in a trailer park in KY with a husband and 3 tots. I do NOT recommend that children try that at home!
I like the finding a foreighn translation. If someone asks what it means, you can tell the truth about the language and fudge on the litteral translation. ('It's german for beloved' instead of 'Its german for Master')

Hauptman, hello. As the master you can choose whatever you prefer to be called. That being said, your consideration of your slaves feelings is admirable. I also note that you  see a little too much protocol in the way she addresses you in public versus private. Try requiring that in public she only use your first name or your middle name, or any damn thing you are both comfortable with. don't be afraid to customize. It is your lives after all.

My parents were not by any stretch of the imaginagion into BDSM, but they did have a 50's marriage - literally (well, it began in the 30's). Still, my mom called my dad "Sir William" sometimes in public. It was done in fun, and usually when he made a flat statement that brooked no argument. He always smiled indulgently at her when she did it.

vampchick88 -> RE: honorary title for public (3/13/2008 5:27:34 PM)

pet, pookie, baby, whatever seems to fit the mood at that particular time. If others look at us and are offended I'm the type that think they shouldn't be listening in.

junecleaver -> RE: honorary title for public (3/13/2008 6:31:15 PM)

I wish he'd let me call him 'boss' because I totally would in private and public  But it really gets on his nerves.  If it doesn't get on your nerves, maybe something playful like that might work.
