I try to read everyone but yeah the extreme ones bug me, esp if they mock one true way when thats clearly what they are advocating

Bound2One -> RE: opinion clash (3/14/2008 5:27:23 AM)

There are definitely a few posters who have gotten under my skin.  I've tried blocking, to no success b/c I'm just too friggin' curious for my own good.  I gotta know what they wrote!  lol  What I usually do when someone irritates me is type out a snarky reply, then wind up deleting it.  It's just not worth the effort and dealing with the aftermath in the more controversial threads, yk?

Something that's really bugged me lately - when someone rants, there's always someone there to say 'why does it matter to you?' or 'let it go' or something along those lines.  Shit, sometimes it just feels good to rant!  It doesn't mean the OP is making this issue his/her life's mission - they just needed to get something off their shoulders.

Yeah when people say "oh thats not importnat" well clearly it was to the OP or they wouldnt have said it, I think some people post for the sake of it, they dont say anything they simply feel they have to reply to everything, If i have nothing to say, i wont say anything

Bound2One -> RE: opinion clash (3/14/2008 7:06:16 AM)

Yup, exactly!

kittinSol -> RE: opinion clash (3/14/2008 7:16:11 AM)

There are people I respect whose opinions I don't always agree with; there are people I don't respect whose opinions I always disagree with; there are people I respect who seem to agree with me always; there are people who are just irksome no matter what... there's even a couple of ghosts who come back once in a while. Then, there are those I feel really empathetic towards but who would take my empathy as a rejection of their extreme lifestyle - such people are the hardest for me to "let go of". So I skip over their posts, most of the time.

I've never blocked anybody - fuck knows the temptation's been great to do so. But it goes against my instinct to go "lalalalala" with my index in my ears pretending not to hear somebody - it reminds me of the school playground, know what I mean? If somebody really pisses me off, I try to exert self-control and to let them carry on with their shit. Obviously, I seldom succeed at this, but perseverance is the mother of many successes [8|] .

It's all part of life's rich tapestry :-) .

lilsubl -> RE: opinion clash (3/14/2008 7:27:46 AM)

hmmmm...i wonder what this thread's all about...seems i have all of you blocked  [:D]

i tried blocking someone once, but it doesn't make them invisible, so you know that they posted...then, someone else would quote the blocked post so i would see it anyway, so i decided to just grow up & get over it...now i see that person's posts & sometimes even reply nicely.......

stormgirl -> RE: opinion clash (3/15/2008 12:25:43 AM)

grow up and get over it . . .sensible . . there are times on every single forum i have been on (and no i did not get banned pbbbt) when i get hot under the collar about a topic, and it is so hard for me to stop arguing on the thread.  it is Such a waste of time and i have to be stopped rather than stop (ok, well, i will take a suggestion to stop, i dont actually have to be hauled from the computer).  i wish i could just let these things roll off my back and watch nice videos . . .

ive figured out how to do the videos part at least!

Mr. Superior likes oysters!

Hi, RealityLicks,

I think that tends to happen in most social settings and isn't specific to the BDSM scene as such, although I guess b/c the scene is a 'minority' it's more noticeable, if that makes sense. Also, when people discuss something in person, regardless of the topic and people's personal levels of intensity, they can u sually find something to relate to one another without feeling the need to adopt those airs of superiority/condescendence, etc..., with the internet, however, it's right there, in your face, people tend to lose social graces b/c there's no consequences for them doing so (usually).

As for your last comment about listening to the 'voice' that's usually ignored... I discovered this on anohter board, it was a discussion on medical issues and one of the posters was clearly profoundly dyslexic, but also young and using text speak. Rather than listen to what he had to say, people were criticising him for his poor grammar/text speak, ridiculing him and basically doing their damnedest to belittle him, until a contributor in her seventies took them to task and said, "I come into this conversation mid-way, a conversation we can all benefit from, yet rather than discuss an issue that affects us all, you would rather focus on tearing down a young man who is certainly different from yourselves, but not lesser, and if you put your malice to one-side and listened to him you will find someone disaffected, refreshing and interesting, and who has had me, in my seventies, full of admiration for not once has he responded adversely to your comments and he shall go from strength to strength, continuing to learn and embrace life, and you shall remain stinted."  That isn't verbatim, but I remember most of what she'd said to the posters on that board.

I feel this very strongly most times I visit this site. I believe the basis of BDSM is actually egalitarianism.  But there are a small handful of people here who's views aren't just unconventional but outright extremist.  The majority of posters prefer to overlook this and effect a friendly relationship with them.  I find anyone who does this really hard to tolerate and usually skip their posts.

The other side of BDSM, online or realtime, is that people are extra cliquey, which might have to do with the levels of trust and openness involved, I not sure.  I've never been able to stomach the scene's tendency to intimidate and ostracize people within it.  I force myse;lf  to listen to the voice that's been forced out - its normally a lot more interesting than the herd.  If I follow, I lose me.

GreedyTop -> RE: opinion clash (3/15/2008 1:30:57 AM)

wow, Miss M.... remind me of that, please, next time I get too snarky?? *hugs*

MissMorrigan -> RE: opinion clash (3/15/2008 2:00:56 AM)

Thing is, Greedy, we're all human (of varying degrees lol) and I'm sure we've ALL been guilty of such behaviour, for whatever reason, I know I have. I have a really lovely friendship that blossomed from such a beginning, the lady had said something I disagreed with, I thought her a bit 'up herself' and said so, we exchanged words and what I said upset her. We often forget there's another human being at the end of our fingertips and we can't see their reactions. What I said to her was thoughtless and not intentionally said to upset her. I did apologise and we got to talking, I'm glad that we did b/c while we still disagree on a lot of things, we remain in touch and do find also a lot of common ground - it also helps me see issues from another perspective, that doesn't mean I will agree with her, but we can discuss such things without trying to 'convert' the other.

GreedyTop -> RE: opinion clash (3/15/2008 2:29:25 AM)

I've got friends like that too, Miss M.... actually.. a former 'playmate' in California started out like that...

but SOME people...  GAWD.... hard to believe that they were the result of sperm meets egg.... *sigh*

MissMorrigan -> RE: opinion clash (3/15/2008 2:45:02 AM)

Yep, there are some posters that are so far up their own arses that I'm sure they could floss their teeth rectally, so I ignore and they reciprocate... it's a mutually convenient situation [:D]

xxblushesxx -> RE: opinion clash (3/15/2008 8:08:14 AM)

Yes, there are certain posters (I can think of two off the top of my head) that I *know* we are going to disagree, and, no matter how 'reasonable' I think I'm being, I'm going to feel attacked by the other one.
Sometimes that person is attacking me, sometimes, I'm sure, it's over-sensitivity.

*lol* Mr. Superior...[:D]

... the people to whom I am referrring in the post would better be classified as 'hell spawned plagues', 'evil alien invasion', or poster children for retroactive abortions...
