Well, I'm sorry - but I aint that kind of person who would dump either the moms or the kittens. I spent the whole night with Pepper, comforting her - not that she needed much more than assurance.

True, I did intend to get them done - but they got pregnant and I wasnt prepared to have their offspring aborted for my convenience. As soon as the kittens are ready to go to their new homes, both cats are off to the vets.

But I'm glad that people like you come to the rescue of cats and kittens whose hosts lack the ability or will to meet their responsibilities. Its a commitment for life as far as I'm concerned and as such I treat my cats in a manner akin to that of my kids - I wouldnt abandon my kids or harm them, so I wouldnt do either to my cats either.

i hope i didn't offend you, LadyEllen. Much, much appreciation for taking care of your mama's during this time/for getting them fixed afterwards.
To BBWN, yes, you are correct, most Humane Societies do offer vouchers for spaying/neutering to help w/the overpopulation so please, LadyEllen, before paying FULL price, check w/your local HS, but unfortunately if mama's able to nurse, she can't get spayed until she dries up so keep those Tom Cats away! [:D]

Lady E.....
allow me to add my congrats to the list.  Aren't they just the cutest little things?  It still amazes me how humans go to Lamaze classes, read tons of books, research on line when it comes time for birthing their own babies, yet animals just do it all by instinct.  Any birth is awesome to see......and I'm sure Mom appreciated the support you gave.

Good luck with the other mama kitty.....hope all goes well with your growing family!

m

PS...I also thought it was a shame you can't fed-ex me one!  What's one more?

LadyRainfire -> RE: Kittens! (3/14/2008 10:45:23 AM)

[sm=mrpuffy.gif] Oh, congratulation, Lady E!!  I would love to see photos of your babies -  I use Photobucket personally. Free and easy to use. I'm glad to hear you're getting the mamas spayed when they're done. That's a good idea though I'm also very happy to hear you have homes lined up! Count my vote for pictures when you can!

MissMorrigan -> RE: Kittens! (3/14/2008 11:39:44 AM)

Lady Ellen, what fabulous news. You're a very proud Grandma (don't think I can't see that look of disgust!) [:D]

Isn't it the most amazing sight? Tight little squashy faces, nose/mouth all pink and kisssome, tiny bundles of fluff and so vulnerable. Do you ever think what it must be like to come into the world for the very first time, everything new and daunting? I'm sure Mother Cat is being diligent over her kitties.. it's been almost fifteen years since I took over the job as mother to my two cats. I carried the female around in my bra between my breasts for the first two weeks of her life - a tiny bundle of black and white fluff but with the biggest head I'd ever seen - reminded me of a cabbage patch doll and feeling them on the hour EVERY hour for days on end - I'm surprised I didn't have a breakdown! When the little buggers were almost seven weeks' old they ruined a beautiful pair of velvet curtains by using them as a playing field - chasing each other over them lol

Do you think you'll become too attached to them?

LadyEllen -> RE: Kittens! (3/14/2008 1:35:46 PM)

Hi MsM

Your curtains story reminds me of my own - when they were little kittens back in the summer they ripped my nets to bits and I thought "I wont replace them until theyve grown up and calmed down" - now theyve grown up and calmed down, I'm glad I didnt spend the money to replace the nets, as I have a multitude of new little shredders on the way! (And the suite is the same!)

Attached? Nah - theyre supercute and will only get cuter, but two is quite enough for me! Mind you, if it turns cold again, a couple of kitten boob warmers might come in handy........!

PHOTOS - there are photos now online at FaceBook under ID "Tess Pepper" ('cause kitties are people too)

what everyone else said!

Congrats and all, Lady E! [:D]

MissMorrigan -> RE: Kittens! (3/15/2008 1:50:19 AM)

Those fur boob warmers come equipped with sharp nails and teeth - I found out the hard way - I awoke one night in agony at finding my male cat trying to feed from one of my nipples and at getting no milk (no surprises there) decided to CHEW on it!  The female has matured into a fifteen year old domme that refuses to be cuddled - I think that stems from my days of keeping her confined to my bra, poor thing! We have gorgeous leather furniture which, upon scrutiny, reveals lots of pin pricks all over it and a few scratches from where my two have run around with the wind up their arses. I wouldn't change that for all the tea in India - and I love my tea!

I'm glad your kittens already have some lovely homes to go to once they are finished weaning. What is it about us people that, when shown a little bundle of fur, we're reduced to a mass of mushyness? lol  I signed up and saw the picture (could only see the one), and they're adorable, Lady Ellen. I'm looking forward to updates from you once they're running around and causing havoc [:D]

Mr. Superior says:

Kittens are cute!

Sometimes, love is small and furry!  And we're all just batting at the String of the Universe!

GreedyTop -> RE: Kittens! (3/15/2008 2:33:01 AM)

Mr S? I like you :) (nobody that knows the appeal of furbabies can be ALL bad!)

LadyEllen -> RE: Kittens! (3/15/2008 5:02:28 AM)

We were woken at half past seven this morning by Tessy - she normally doesnt come in the bedroom to sleep any more, but this morning she was on the bed, and miaowing at us - which is also unusual as Tessy is a very quiet cat (in any case, Pepper does all the talking for her!). It was clear that kittens were on the way!

Tessy lay in front of the fire mewing whilst I stroked her, rather than get in her nest and I was concerned about her having her babies there, but then at quarter to nine she got up and plonked herself down in the nest. At 0902 came the first kitten, to a huge yowl from Tessy - much louder than Pepper when she was giving birth. That kitten was black and white like its mom, then the second one at 0930 (accompanied by a smaller yowl) - this one is gorgeous and looks like a cross between a leopard and a cheetah! (I am so tempted to keep this one - its something special!) Then at 1010 a third - another black and white one, and not a sound from Tessy, and then at 1120 the fourth - another black and white, and again not a sound from mom.

When Pepper was having her babies, Tessy had run away and hid, but when Tessy had her first baby, Pepper was straight over to give Tessy a lick and to help out with the baby. We tried to take her out of Tessy's nest twice, but to no avail, she just kept coming straight back. She was in the way from our point of view, but Tessy didnt seem to mind so we left her in there in the end, and all in all Pepper made a good little nurse, coming over to look after her sister and going back to her own babies every few minutes.

Its now midday and there might yet be one more to come; Tessy's bump was always bigger than Pepper's so we expected more than the three which Pepper produced from Tessy; we're on four so far, and five wouldnt be a surprise!

LadyEllen -> RE: Kittens! (3/16/2008 5:16:08 AM)

I must confess, I have absolutely no idea how to work Face Book (my son made the profile!) so I'll have to ask the techie here about how to make the pics public

wankerforuse -> RE: Kittens! (3/16/2008 8:12:57 AM)

Goodluck hope they all turn out to be fit and healthy,and hope they go to good homes and not bad ones.

LadyEllen -> RE: Kittens! (3/16/2008 1:29:48 PM)

Well WFU, we have seven kittens and homes as follows;
"Lepardy" (the mini cheetah) is staying here (much too special to give away!)
The all black one is also staying here with me (this will give me one from each litter - four cats in total, heaven help me)
"Misty" and the other grey are going to my ex
My son's teacher wants one
and between in laws and friends, the other two are more than accounted for!

So, all good homes with people I know

Lady E  I'm glad to hear that they are all doing well. [:)]

LadyEllen -> RE: Kittens! (3/16/2008 4:10:26 PM)

Theyve been funny today - the moms, not the kitties.

We made two nests on opposite sides of the living room. Pepper took one with her babies, and Tess took the other with her babies. Then Pepper got up from her babies and went over to the other nest, where she picked up one of Tessy's babies and brought it back to her nest. Tess was not at all perturbed, and the kitten suckled Pepper happily.

A bit later, Pepper took the borrowed baby back and it suckled at its mom again. Then Pepper took the rest of her babies over to Tess and came for a cuddle with me. All three suckled happily on their still unperturbed auntie with their cousins. Then Pepper got into Tessy's nest and suckled some of the babies whilst Tess cared for the others. Brilliant.

And then, Pepper took her babies behind the sofa out of sight, whilst Tess remained in the nest.

When I came back this evening (I had to take my babies home), there were no cats or kittens in sight; both moms and all seven kittens were behind the sofa! Thats OK, but there's only about 8 inches between the sofa and the wall at the bottom, so they were all a bit crowded.

So, I pulled the sofa away from the wall a bit, pinned a blanket from the sofa top to the wall for a roof, blocked the one end with a pouffe and spare pillows (the pouffe will also stop the sofa moving back if someone sits heavily), and now they have a proper little den to raise their babies in - I think the problem might have been them feeling a bit exposed and insecure, especially with all the visitors we've had to see them!

chatondamore -> RE: Kittens! (3/16/2008 5:03:54 PM)

Momma Kittys are so funny about their babies! It's awesome that they are getting along so well and happily swapping babies back and forth. It shows a lot of trust in you and each other. Hiding them is because of nerves about visitors. Don't be surprised that since you made it all nice and comfy if they don't pack them up and move them again! We had a momma move her babies three times in 2 days, but i think the toddler in the house made her nervous.
I'm so jealous and wish i could have more baby kitties in my house, but hubby said we had more than enough. *pout*
