Ok right then.

Y'all have heard me complain about the poor air quality here.

This topic is one that I am "done talking" and want action.  In short, I want to be able to breath. I have considered seeing a DR for my difficulty- but then say- why? When the source is the problem, not being non-doped up.

To this end- I have been in contact with congress.  Done research.

It appears that thru my efforts- I am now on some type of "board"- my first thought was "oh good".... well upon closer look it is a horse and pony show- not a board who has any say so.

Meanwhile- I had weatherization here- which has made a diffference in that fumes dont seep in quite so much.  One idea I came across is a whole house vent fan.  That could expell bad air- presuming the replacement air is better.

I questioned the state, in that burn barrels burning is supposedly papers that are recycleable. No compliance of ashes are ever done- thus plastic burn as a matter of routine.

Anyhow- that is the status of things now.  Any ideas to help are appreciated.

63  of the states 67 air quality stations flunked.  Maybe I should move to Montana.
Thanks

being that I cant change the world- per haps it is best to simply explore ways to keep air clean inside.  I dont know.

You would think that all those people banging on about banning filthy smokers would also be banging on about clean air....

...then I guess one wouldn't, they are probably car drivers and it is car drivers that create most of the noxious fumes in towns and cities.

People only complain about other people's shit and never their own, even when their own smells so much worse than the other persons.

some get upset over fallen leaves blowing into their yard- but my leaves blow to the next yard....so it all balances.

this isnt about smokers. i can choose to be away from those who smoke.   but the air seeping into my place.... i cant get away from.

1. road fumes.
2. burn barrels.
3. ?

Maybe it would help you, but I used live next to a main road and would on occaision find layers of black dust on things when I cleaned up. This dust I took to be carbon, as a residue of diesel fumes so I took action. Not able to change the world, I made the interior air of my house more palatable, I fitted air ioniser filter devices in each room. An ioniser attracts dust to where it is, the filter, a HEPA filter filtered the air from the attracted dust.

It was effective, the instructions with the device where to check the filter every six weeks, this became every week, as the black dust reduced the efficiency, so the dust was tipped into a bag and the filter cleaned.  I disposed of the dust at my workplace, it having provision for disposing of hazardous waste.

On one occaision I sent a bag of dust to the council enviromental health, who confirmed it as carbon, mixed with other chemicals, and were amazed that I could collect the stuff from the air in my house with windows kept shut roadside. Nothing they could do about it, as they presumed most lawful vehicles on the road were within acceptable emission limits, their advice, to just keep on with what I am doing, as it is clearly beneficial.

Not the ones I had, but similar, mine obtained from a highstreet outlet.

when i lived across the river i thought the dust was from the farm feilds.

the good news is that states around the great lakes are enacting more serious guidlines then the fed.

AE, i love your reply. it gives me insight on this. due to the housing market and a host of other reasons- i cant just move. one thing is where do you go to get away from it?

the siding on the house gets so dirty it pitts onto it!  over summer im out all the time washing it down. i thought of sheets configured as shutters to capture some of the particulates- even a big sculpture with the purpose of trapping some of the grit before it seeps inside.

the neighbor thinks i am nuts.  tho she is further back from the road. i had even thought of suggesting that this road be a one way street. [it is a state route]

I hope you do find some solace, as I am only too aware of life next to a major road, not only the airbourne pollutants, but the audible and visible pollutants. Audible in fast moving rescue vehicle sirens that split the quiet of the night, the booming stereo systems of cars and the high revving engines and squeal of tyres of the young and stupid. The occaisional gunfire too and there the police chopper doing it's stuff at low level.

Visible in the constant stream of tin boxes, the murderers of my cat.

That is past, now I live on a hilltop, square in the blast of the south west wind straight off the atlantic. Cats, they are half feral here, no threats, they are gone for days.

Understands at the going nuts appearance, it gets you that way.

the motorists toss out trash- beer bottles-  i know people will be people- there have been times i refused to sweep up the broekn glass.  luckily- no gun fire, no helicopters.   we think we have crime here- but in reality it isnt that bad.  with many events it is wise to simply mind ones own business. if there is a fight in the street- i dont go out to be part of it. i guess as long as they arent wrecking my stuff.

14 miles away they want to build a 1/2way house for cons coming back into society.

back to the point- i do actually own an air filter. i should find it and get it working. i looked at the link-you posted... im sure i can upgrade as i go to more or better units. we have alot of used stuff here that gets sold.

the smog gets in my hair- which means i wash it more.  all the particals trapped. so that rubs into pillow cases.

diesel trucks are the worst.  to give you an example- it is like being in traffic behind a diesel truck for 10 hours a day. after 10pm the traffic goes down- so does the smog.

next there is a wall up- per the river- this bouces the particles back onto the house. it is a 9 feet tall cement wall.  happily this year  that whole area gets landscaped and a sidewalk.   the sidewalk so-so, but the shrubbery will absorb some of the smog.

:-)

Aneirin -> RE: Clean air- U, and how ~ ! (3/15/2008 8:25:40 AM)

I sympathise, diesel trucks are the worst, them and buses. Passenger service vehicles being it seems exempt some part of the emission regulations. I had a major bus stop square outside the house where buses used to idle for five to ten minutes before pulling off with a roar and a cloud of black smoke. In reality most of the cars were fine, they at least, the legal ones having had to comply to the current emission regs, but not the PSV's, and they were like, every ten minutes, idling and belching.

Even my own car despite its thirty year age was clean, an old design, but maintained by me and clean, even it's yearly test it passed with ease and with surprise to some testers, that not all old engines are the polluters. Not an old engine, but old design, I built that thing from new parts incorporating what modern technology I could and driven it within it's limits, the engine costing near on the whole of the vehicle, but the most important part, without which, it is nothing.

Although we would like to, we cannot change the world, big business rules there, but we can help ourselves, and do what is best for ourselves. Plants do help, photosynthesis is beneficial, I used to feed mine with the filtered water I drank, why should plants thrive on waterbourne pollution, they helped me, I helped them, an equal partnership.

Even my four mile cycle to work, I wore a smog filter and was amazed at what it cut out!
