I can't believe this, I used to correspond with someone who would know but they are gone.

Media playing on a PC is just wierd. I got these albums on the drive, Time Life Sounds Of The 70s. I go to play it and Windows Media Player 9 says file format unsupported. This is not the first time, I know what I am doing so I force it to open in Mplayer, the older version, and this works for alot of files, which makes no sense actually.

Well this time even that wouldn't play the files, now I got a modified sendto menu, and there is a program called Irfanview. I got it. I do not have Winamp. Irfanview has proved to be the best player I have, it sounds great too.

I have an Asound card, the drivers are not XP certified or whatever, and I can hear it, on heavy drumbeats for example in the absence of other sound, it makes this puck puck sound. Alot of people don't hear it until I mention it.

But I am listening to something right now that Bill gates' people can't play, and it's I Shot The Sherrif by Eric Clapton. I have this as a single in my normal directory, and I will tell you now, going through Mediaplayer I would get the puck puck so bad I would shut it down. But this sounds good.

Now get this, this program was DLed off the net, and it was a long time ago. When I got XP I renamed the install directory, and then dragged in all my favorites, cookies, all that.

This program was DLed about four years ago, and it was written by a guy in Serbia. This is not bullshit. You can go to Irfanview dot com still probably, but even if you can I still recommend the version I have. Newer versions might have copyright protection or something like that.

I also have an image editor with a capture function that can capture anything on the screen, given my settings. I mean anything, I can capture stills from a DVD if I want, and this is on an old 433.

Pretty cool what I am listening to, it's like listening to the radio about 25 years ago. Too bad Windows XP Professional Corporate Edition couldn't play it for me. One day I will have to "unsteal" it lol. I had to go back (I installed in an alternate directory so I didn't lose everything) to my old program folder. I put it in my sendto menu.

So how the hell does this five year old program run through XP drivers and do it better and be able to even play the thing ? Nothing Windows has can play it, but here I am listening to it. And I got good ears, it is processing the sound better IMO, and my O means something. It has also not skipped even once as I screw around on the web, whatever.

Might have to stick with it. Benny And The Jets Now, I haven't heard that in a long time.

Tell you this much, when I was running Linux I just about couldn't find a file it would not play.

I DLed this a long time ago. The license agreement explicitly states that you are free to distribute the few small files that are needed to run it. There is no installation. It just runs, you set the file associations if you please.

Written by some guy in bumfukt Serbia somewhere, and better than Windows Media Player 9. OK.

Holy shit, I forgot this was on here, Smokin' In The Boy's Room. If it were up to Bill Gates I would not be listening to this.

Salute' to our brothers in Bumfukt Serbia.

Depends what CODECS you've got installed older ones may have become obsolete and so the new version of Windows doesn't have them but you can usually find them from somewhere to install.

You can probably find the XP equivalent somewhere, I've looked but links to things tend to get a bit murky on Microsoft sites for previous versions of Windows.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=06fcaab7-dcc9-466b-b0c4-04db144bb601&displaylang=en

Also I've found latest version of media player is 11 anyhow.

I am hip to CODECs, in fact I got a bunch of them. I think I could damnear play a DVD on Win 95. But the question my friend has become, why is it that Windows needs CODECs but Irfanview does not ?

Answer me that and you are in for some free beer at the very fucking least. They are the leaders when some guy in country that has been bombed by the US et al, comes up with this and gives it to the world.

This program is so small there can be no trickery in it, and it came out before everybody was on the net so it is not doing what we might suspect, running remotely. Impossible.

But why the hell does this program play it but WM can't. I think I detect some hubris.

Anyone wants the version of Irfanview I got, and I am starting to think that yes, you do, say so. I will put it in my FTP. I have seen this program play things I never seen before, and then sometimes it pops up with a message "This file has the wrong extention, rename ?".

Gotta go, Ill be baaaaaaack.

the holy grail on net is vid streaming.   to this end- no force wants a different force to cash in on its format.   this explains some of the codex.

if you have a cell phone- some have a audio record- you can capture music this way.  granted not the sound quality you want but if waiting in a DR office better then nothing.

every format is afraid some other format will get the cash.   conbine that with copywrite law-, and teck inovation, and thats why the stuff onky 1/2 way works.

I was grabbing porn using real player- which wont play on media- so im thinking im wasting my time.  a jpeg gif could be better time wise.....

google supports open source- that is good- as we can all have the same format so we are not constantly re-inventing the wheel.

yet- the dash for cash- it is some years away before we reach a same point.

---and-  considering crappy programing- the river today once again- has better programing! ye ha!

I do recall Irfanview some years ago as a graphics viewer I’ve not seen much of it since so I don’t know the answer to that. I would assume though it would struggle if it wanted to play protected material independent of windows media player as all media players supporting wma have to work through that. Unprotected mp3 files etc. is another matter entirely I suppose.

First off lets make sure we're on the same page. A codec means coder/decoder or compression/decompression . Checking out irfanview's website I'm guessing, if you're actually having a codec issue, that the author bundled in some codecs that your other media players don't.

Although file format unsupported doesn't usually mean you're missing a codec. WMP is pretty good about opening files and trying to get needed codecs from the web. What is the file extension for the file you want to play?

Have you tried using VLC? I use Amarok and mplayer myself, but I just tried VLC and it worked fine with both mp3 and flacs, so....

I've always thought of it like this:

PC's: It *might be*, or *might not be* possible, and it *might* take a long time to figure out it isn't...
Macs: It's either dirt-simple, or totally impossible. Either way, you'll know soon enough.
Linux: It's possible. You might not want to invest the time in it, but it can be done.

Full, it is old. I DLed it at least five yers ago.

There have been no updates or anything, yet it plays. Today.

Whayt else can I say, some dude in Serbia has his shit together, probably much to the dismay of the US govt. You see, that program does not respect copyrights. It just plays the file. It will go fullscreen on video and did so back in the 98 days. WMP9 will do that now in XP, but it wouldn't back then. I am starting to think they are a bit topheavy as a corporation. They are behind, or there is an ulterior motive, there are no ifs ands or buts. Look at the facts and make your own judgement.

I don't need a new PC, I need about three, I want to check out Linux more, and I would like to try a Mac. Ma has a Mac, I think I might have to go see her. About time anyway.

Fast Reply to no one in particular.

I have used Irfanview since Win 98 days as well.  I always make it
the default image viewer on any machine I set up.  So do my friends.

We have found it to be small, fast, uses minimum resources, etc.
Also it comes with no spyware, adware, etc.  In other words just
about a perfect program.  It does images, image translation, image
manipulation, image sorting.  I think it is wonderful.  I still have it
on a PII and a PIII running 98, that I use for some stuff.

It does not surprise me that with it's plug ins it does a good job
with audio.  I don't know anyone who has tried it who has not
been very happy with it.

I still have Irfanview, used it before I got thumbsplus for pic files, but for media files I also use VLC which is freeware and it will play most everything MP3s( I gave up trying to use WMP....it would start using 90% of my mem), MPEG, avis, wmvs , MP4s and a lot of my avis that hubby took of my replicants when they were babies(14-16 years ago)

I stand by this 100%.

I also use mplayer and Amarok without any problems.

If you're using Windows XP I strongly recommend having a live Linux distro which runs from your CD ROM as a second option. It's as simple as setting your computer to boot from the CD ROM, shut down Windows, insert Linux CD, restart computer and voila.. a complete alternative system.

You can download Knoppix 5.1.1 from http://www.knoppix.de

I also recommend PC Linux OS for its simplicity from http://www.pclinuxos.com

Please note the file is what is known as an ISO image but will look like a WinRar archive.

Just get your CD burning software to burn it as an ISO image, and Bob's your uncle.

At this point *all* the major distros come in a "Live CD" format. Fedora, Ubuntu .... Yeah, there are others, but it's hard to remember their names this early...
