Clinton earmark requests: You ask, we don't tell

With the barrage of Obama commentary of late, it's worth remembering the Democrats are fielding another loser....

The whole Democratic party is a joke in my opinion... They keep claiming they are going to clean up the budget and get the country's economy back on track....bullcrap!

They want to eliminate the Bush tax cuts which means everyone who makes over $30,000 a year will have to pay more money to the government. How does that help the middle class is something someone is going to have to explain to me. And just this past week the Senate voted and refused to cut pork barrel projects. John McCain was leading the charge to cut the pork out of the budget and only 29 senators agreed with him.

Congress has no intention, no intention at all no matter which party controls it, of balancing this budget.

Sadly, you're right. The Democrats have never lost their addiction to "tax and spend" politics, and the Republicans can't resist any proposal to curtail civil liberties.

Even moreso than in 2000 and 2004, "None of the above" is the best option this election cycle.

Among Clinton, Obama, and McCain, McCain is the least noxious. His campaigns against porkbarrel politics predate his election campaign, whereas Clinton and Obama are new converts to the idea. He's likely to get my vote this time, merely because the idea of Clinton or Obama as President is downright scary.

Hey Celtic, I enjoy your posts.  :-)

Earmarks are 1% of the budget.   The meat of the budget is "entitlements" and "defense".

I did not trust Bush to reform Social Security.

The next president will have to.

No doubt- all will have to compromise on SS.

SS gets emotional, per any discussion.  Many think it wont be there when they need it.

Anyhow- "distraction" in government is an interesting tactic.  There are forces in any argument- that WANT distraction. So as to keep the status quo.

What do you see as the outcome of SS 'reform" ?

Eliminating earmarks will not balance the budget. They are, however, that part of government spending most representative of a politician's willingness to put his or her own re-election above the greater public interest. Dispense with earmarks and perhaps more weight will be given to proper paring of the "meat" you mention.

Social Security is indeed the political "third rail". Providing for the elderly is indeed a noble use of government largesse, but it is funded by a pernicious, almost perverse, regressive tax (it is the only tax that is applied to the first dollar that is earned and not the last). Until that changes, reforming Social Security is likely to remain a game of words more than solutions.

Her justification for this is that since earmark issue was not raised in NY Newspaper during her tenure as Senator it is not an issue now, Obama and McCain have published their earmarks however.  Also according to the New York TImes  Fundraiser for Hillary Clinton in Flordia and MIchigan are threating to withhold contribution and demand refunds on previos contributions if the Democrates don't let Hillary have her way.  Both States moved their primaries up against party rules.  This was a move that favored Hillary Clinton, who won both State, in fact in Michigan she was the only one on the ballot.  Hillary Clinto wants both States voting to stand and not have a second voting.

Hillary needs to get a clue.  She is not running for President of New York, but President of the United States.  Last time I checked, there were 49 of them outside of New York's borders, and each of them has an interest in knowing the details of her record of public service.  That includes her earmark requests.

Issues are determined by the voters, not the candidates.
