MadameMarque -> RE: Slang or casual talk, allowed? (3/16/2008 7:02:08 PM)

I'll add that, coincidentally, I had a communicae from someone who closed with, "okay, baby," just in the past couple of days.  That was a first, by the way.  I blocked him.

Why?  Because I believe that he knows that's inappropriate.  Maybe he was trying to be provocative, hoping to instigate a scene, with me responding by putting him in his place.  Maybe he feels too vulnerable, writing me as a submissive, and so he wants to inject a little attitude.  In the first case, that would feel like pulling my strings, to me.  Need I say, I don't like that.  In the second case, I need someone who's bold enough to dare to go with his feelings, instead of starting out defensive about being submissive.  Either way, I didn't feel he and I had any hope, just from that opening.

Yes, indeed, I loathe such as your example, OP.  With anyone (whatever orientation) I am close and friendly with I enjoy some casual speak or slang use... but casual or slang use doesn't have to equal over-stepping or impolite address.  Especially on a first contact, but always applying based on the stage and type of the relationship, expressing oneself respectfully to another within the boundaries you have at that point is necessary.

A "hey baby" first contact would have me leaving a personal note in their profile for my future reference and that's all.  I'd not respond to them most likely and if I did it would be a brush off.

I don't mind mistakes in grammar and spelling, nor slang, as long as it seems to me that the person contacting me is sincere and trying their best.  This is not a grammar test.

*giggle*  Isn't that the truth?  You have to cut some people a little slack if it truely appears that they never learned to type.  Then, it's almost precious to think of these poor things struggling to type with two fingers trying their very best to please.

Ive gotten those inappropriate messages too MadameMarque and I also feel that they want to instigate either a scene or a pissing contest. The last one I recieved said "How big are your tits girl?" I responded "Bigger than your brain evidentally". [;)]

If they are around my age, there is absolutely no excuse for someone not being able to type - my school system growing up was backwards as hell about most things, but we had computers when I was in 2nd grade and had computer classes twice a week.  By the time I was in jr high, everyone was required to take 6 wks of a computer class in 6th and 7th grades.  By the time I was in high school all English and Literature papers were to be done on computers (and they took us into the computer labs to work on them at least once a week when we had big term papers due) along with some other classes that required that.  If someone is my age (30) or younger, I expect them to be able to type - mistakes happen, of course, but at this point, there is little to no excuse for someone who grew up in the computer age not being able to type at least well enough that I don't have to translate from gibberish to English.

I too dislike overly casual or less-than-polite emails from people. I did, however,  have a humorous phone call once from a submissive -- I called him and he answered the phone "Yeeeaaaah?" and I nearly fell out of my chair with shock and said "excuse me?" in my best icy tone. Turns out he was expecting an immediate call back from a male friend and hadn't bothered to look at who had actually called!

I suspect anyone that considers "whasssup?" to be a greeting is going to be a trifle young for us anyway, Lady Hathor!  <G>

I recently had a submissive take umbrage because I was offended at an email that started out:
" hhhhhhhheeeeyyyyyy babbbbbbyyyyyy"---yes I was offended, not because I am a D and he is an s--but because I find that type of communication offensive anytime when a relationship is not or has not been established and one of an intimate nature at that-----I found no humor in it whatsoever---if I won't allow it if approached at a bar, I am not going to allow it in email chats--and I simply cannot abide familiarity where non exists---do you tend to allow subs to be more casual, less casual or do you expect the standards not to deviate?

Familiarity chaps my ass when the individual doesn't know me.  In fact, that message coming from any s type of mine, regardless if he's brand new to me or having been in service 10 years would elicit a strong, undesirable response from me.  That's just plain unacceptable.
