What you have said is one of the reasons many feel the actions of antidepressants are unknown. Using Wellbutrin as an example...it is known how this medication effects/controls depression. In the test studies of this medication, however, it was noted that a large percentage of those in the study stopped or greatly reduced the need to smoke. The reason for this added benefit is not known.

Bupropion is sometimes prescribed as a smoking cessation aid, even if the patient doesn't present symptoms of depression.

I wouldn't worry too much - people who stop smoking by taking Zyban often start smoking again once the treatment has ended anyway.

i've been wondering the past couple of days why people who are not prescribed anti-depressant medication are so strongly opposed to it? Seriously, i can think of lots of reasons (none of them either justified or rational) but would like to hear from some people themselves. It seems to me that some people are so blatantly against anti-depressants that they'd rather throw away the baby with the bath water so to speak.
Thanks for your help in providing me some understanding.

Kali,

I think the issue isn't with anti-depressants, but rather what they can (and often do) represent.  The fear is that too many doctors prescribe anti-depressants hoping to 'fix' problems that need more than just medication to fix.  They are a tool, like any other, that if used responsibly can do wonderful things, and if used carelessly can do little, or even be damaging.

I think it's fair to say that many doctors have a vested personal interest that isn't always strictly medical in nature, in putting people on medication.  It takes far less time to prescribe medication and send a patient on the way, than it does to spend several hours worth of therapy.  For an HMO, it says 100$ a month worth of medication vice several hundred dollars worth of therapy.

But there are clear situations where anti-depressants can mean a faster, healthier, safer recovery from a large number of issues.  So yes, throwing the baby out with the bathwater is equally foolish.  As part of a complete medical treatment, I'd say they're invaluable.

I did not think it was that bad myself.... but I have a warped sense of humor too and I would rather laugh about the challenges I have had then cry about them... but that is just my opinion ( I suppose this is why I am a huge South Park fan)
