Aspartame was used as an ant killer in the '50s, wasn't it? It was was banned in Europe until 1983, when the US pushed through safety barriers in order to sell that junk in the EU.

pahunkboy -> RE: Hawaii Senator -ban aspartane (3/17/2008 6:55:49 AM)

...i dont know. food w it- doesnt get ants.   i do eat tic tacs- to deal with dry mouth- and as a snack.

tho i no longer chug diet soda.   but the damage might already be done ...

Just for fun you might want to check Dick Chenny's connection to aspartame.

This is just like the old wives tale of microwaves changing the chemical structure of food and making it cancerous...Suddenly everyone eating microwave foods is going to come down with cancer.

Studies show some adverse effects with aspartame but other studies show no effects at all.

There is also not one proven case of aspartame causing a disease in a human. As for formeldihyde, did you know your body actually creates small amounts of this as a waste product? The body has the enzymes to break this down and the amount created from aspartame metabolism is miniscule.

It's funny how when you look at this debate, you see people against claim it causes every disease known to man. Any anti-aspartame website on the internet will claim it causes diabetes, blindness, neuro-damage, Alzheimers, cancer, brain tumors, etc, etc, etc... the list goes on and on and on.

The only actually linked adverse effects reported is headaches in a small percentage of people. But that doesn't always mean something. My mother used to get headaches triggered by chocolate.

Also one has to wonder if side-effects reported by aspartame is actually from the aspartame or maybe from a more potent ingredient such as caffeine. Caffeine has been linked to headaches, irritability, nausea, high blood pressure, and could aggrivate heart issues.

Fine then, stuff your face with it all you can; me, I'll avoid that crap altogether.

Real0ne -> RE: Hawaii Senator -ban aspartane (3/17/2008 8:34:12 AM)

Cheney or Rumsfeld?

“…As noted in the 1985 Congressional Record, then CEO of Searle Laboratories, Donald Rumsfeld, said that he would "call in his markers" to get the drug approved. …”

“For 16 years, the FDA denied approval of aspartame because of compelling evidence of its contributing to brain tumors and other serious disabilities. Donald Rumsfeld, present Secretary of Defense in the Bush Administration, left President Ford's administration as Chief of Staff to become the CEO of aspartame producer G D Searle Co. in 1981. Shortly after, Rumsfeld became the CEO, and the day after President Reagan took office, aspartame was quickly approved by FDA Commissioner Arthur Hayes over the objections of the FDA's Public Board of inquiry. Hayes had been recently appointed by the Reagan Administration. Shortly after aspartame's approval by the FDA, Hayes joined NutraSweet's public relations firm under a ten year contract at $1,000 a day.”

It's already labelled.  It doesn't need to be banned.  If you don't like it, just don't buy it and leave everyone else the fuck alone.

I swear, I'm amazed at how some folks can cry for "civil liberties" and then call to "ban" stuff in the very next breath.  Idiots.

Estring -> RE: Hawaii Senator -ban aspartane (3/17/2008 9:13:53 AM)

Surprise surprise! A Democrat is behind this.
I guess something must be done about all the people dropping like flies from using aspartame. Ridiculous.

MsBearlee -> RE: Hawaii Senator -ban aspartane (3/17/2008 9:47:58 AM)

I'd Google “Rumsfeld + Aspartame” to get the history regarding how the crap came to the market and then added to 4000 products worldwide.

Yes, it's been labeled, but...should it have been?  I don’t think so.

And it’s hard to avoid!  Here’s an interesting article:  http://www.mercola.com/article/aspartame/fraud.htm

Who gives a shit if Don Rumfeld drinks diet Coke?  I'm not even saying I drink it or not.  I'm just saying it's no one's goddamn business if I do or not.

The same mentality that bans substances is rampant among those who want to ban consensual adult sexual behavior or paraphenalia.  Peas in a pod.

cyberdude611 -> RE: Hawaii Senator -ban aspartane (3/17/2008 10:41:29 AM)

You guys are also forgetting that some people claim cell phones cause brain cancer....how many of you use cell phones?

And they tested our water and found all sorts of pharmaceuticals. And tests show bottled water aint much better than tap water either so there is no escape....

Aspartame is the least of our worries...

kittinSol -> RE: Hawaii Senator -ban aspartane (3/17/2008 10:44:33 AM)

Hey, if it's the least of your worries... why do you post about it? Do you have shares in the manufacturer of the poison or something [;)] ?

Estring -> RE: Hawaii Senator -ban aspartane (3/17/2008 10:49:13 AM)

Lol. Now it's a poison. Show me all the people dying from aspartame.

cyberdude611 -> RE: Hawaii Senator -ban aspartane (3/17/2008 11:48:19 AM)

Talk about conflict of interest....

Hawaii has a large sugar industry that has been struggling. Wouldnt a ban on artificial sweetners help that industry?

It's certainly not the least of my worries.  I can't ingest the stuff without getting a migraine so bad it feels like someone cracked a hammer over my head.  I've ended up in the ER twice, had CAT scans done to rule out stroke, and undergone all sorts of fun tests.

The culprit?  Aspartame.  I removed it from my diet - no more hammers on my head.  The few times I thought, "Nahhh" and had it again, here comes that hammer.

domiguy -> RE: Hawaii Senator -ban aspartane (3/17/2008 11:53:31 AM)

I have no idea of the actual damage caused by the consumption of apspartame. Label it.

It is time to get the government out of our hair...Legalize most drugs....label them and move on.

LaTigresse -> RE: Hawaii Senator -ban aspartane (3/17/2008 12:07:27 PM)

The solution is quite simple really. Provide people with complete unbiased information and let them make their own informed choices.

If the health insurance companies say they will not cover an illness that has been proven to have been caused by consumption of a dangerous substance, it is the price you pay. If a child becomes ill from consumption of a dangerous product, child endangerment and the potential loss of parental rights.

If people say "but I didn't knooooooooow" we can pull the "BULLSHIT!" card on them.

Of course, this would all mean we would have to go back to people taking responsibility for all their own shit. Novel concept I know.

As for aspartane, no fucking way!.......I will stick to good old fashioned SUGAR, thank you very much!
