LadyEllen -> an ode to the breaking storm.... (3/18/2008 1:17:49 PM)

I went down to the supermarket
To get the shopping in
The bill was even higher than
The week before’s had been
I asked the cashier at the till
Just why it should be so
She just smiled and told me that
She really didn’t know

Her wages hadn’t risen but her
Bills were rising too
Mortgage, gas, electric, fuel
She didn’t know what to do
It was getting to the stage
Where working didn’t pay
Better to claim unemployment
And at home to stay

I paid my bill by credit card
My wages weren’t enough
And saw the headlines on the racks
That times are getting tough
And as I left I wondered at
The other folks I passed
Using credit cards the same
And how long it could last

The newspapers reported on
The progress in Iraq
And how in just a few decades
Our soldiers could be back
And when I went to fill the car
The price was up again
But to get to work I have no choice
So VISA took the strain

And there above the casualties
The injured and the dead
The bankers were complaining
That they were in the red
But all would be OK for them
The central banks stepped in
And we’d be charged to set things right
And make sure they’d still win

The law and regulations
For sure had been obeyed
But there would be investigation
All concerns would fade
Nothing to be seen here folks
Just move along now please
And none of you need worry but
To pay the interest fees

The currency is worthless
Your pension’s down the drain
But at the top all things are well
So please don’t stress your brain
With trying hard to work out
Just how this mess was made
Its really not your business
What they do in the shades

Repossessions on the rise
Its clear where lies the blame
The stupid feckless borrowers
Are the ones who’re named
But the law of contract
Says one cant make a deal
There’s something in there not quite right
I just cant help but feel

And then I read about Iraq
A country full of oil
And the blood of our young men that
Was spilt to free that soil
A barrel of the black stuff
Has never been so dear
While gallons of the red stuff
Are cheaper by the year

A brave man in the White House
Who’d made it to the top
Once told the world in certain terms
Just where the buck should stop
But that was in the old days
When some things weren’t for sale
And negligent mismanagement
Might lead one straight to jail

Another man now holds that place
And God knows why that it is
And even if we did concede
That the fault just isn’t his
Events will surely happen
A man can make mistakes
But this is where the buck still stops
Regardless of the breaks

And what I cant get over is
That when there is success
This man is in the limelight
To assure us he’s the best
But when it all starts going wrong
Its circumstance and such
And he is there to rescue us
Well thank you very much

E
