COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - An aide says science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke has died.

Rohan De Silva says Clarke died early Wednesday after suffering from breathing problems. He was 90.

Clarke is the author of more than 100 books, including “2001: A Space Odyssey.” That work became the basis of the 1968 film of the same name, and spawned three book sequels.

Wasn't "2001" originally titled "The Sentinel" ? I think he only changed it after the movie became such a huge success.

In any case, it is a sad loss. So many of science fiction's greats are gone. Herbert, Dick, Heinlein, Asimov, and now Clarke. Well, at least we still have Harlan "I don't write science fiction!" Ellison.

Yeah, and don't call it "sci fi" around him.... [:D]. I don't know the last time Harlan wrote anything.... fiction-wise.

At least he's still around to write stuff.

Let's not forget the heir apparent, Larry Niven.

RIP Mr. Clarke

This is a good thing?

First Heinlein then Asimov and now Clarke. More and more I find myself turning to stories written by these men over anything written by the "hot new talents." has anything better than Nightfall, Moon is a harsh Mistress and 2001 been written in the last 30 years?

Just as Al Gore invented the internet so he invented the geo stationary satellite

Harlan hasn't been a "hot new talent" in a couple of decades.... [:D]

DomKen -> RE: Arthur C. Clarke RIP (3/18/2008 4:56:48 PM)

The midget god of thunder has never been a talent.

Level -> RE: Arthur C. Clarke RIP (3/18/2008 4:58:37 PM)

His millions of fans would not agree; nor would Asimov, Sturgeon, Silverberg.....

(about the talent part, anyway)

Dune.

Dune was first published in 1966 or 42 yeqars ago. Children of Dune, the final book of the trilogy and IMO the last evend decent Dune novel, came out in 1977 or 31 years ago. And I don't see Dune as being really comparable with the three works I already posted.

Marc2b -> RE: Arthur C. Clarke RIP (3/19/2008 8:24:00 AM)

Thank you Mister Clark for bringing me many moments of reading plasure.

RIP

Feric -> RE: Arthur C. Clarke RIP (3/19/2008 7:44:04 PM)

Childhood's End remains one of my favorites.

Arthur C. Clarke and Isaac Asimov shared a friendly rivalry for many years. Perhaps we should think of them as an act reunited. [;)]

The Dune saga is six books, therefore a hexology, not a trilogy. Unless of course you're looking at it from the viewpoint of two separate trilogies, which from your comment I think you are. Personally, I see all six books as one uninterrupted series.

And while Children was good, my favorite is God Emperor Of Dune. And that book I would put up against "The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress." Hell, I would put God Emperor Of Dune up against either "Starship Troopers" or the uncut "Stranger In a Strange Land."
