His death is a shock and a real loss. I didn't truly (madly) rate him until The Talented Mr Ripley but despite what the critics thought, it was an excellent film for my money. As an individual, he was by all accounts a decent and modest man and its a shame he has died so young after what was ostensibly just a routine procedure. British cinema has lost someone significant today.
