Hi All,

I need to purchase a few things and was hoping some of you could point me to US based sites that you may have bought things from in the past and had good luck with. I need a little bit of everything as most of my equipment seems to have been lost or misplaced when I moved across the country.

Thanks

i will resist the temptation to post the link to my site, but, would like to ask some things to help me improve my BDSM site and business.

What are the main things that people are looking for when evaluating a good BDSM web site and/or business? Are they basically the same things as vanilla sites/businesses? Are pics of the items more important? How important is it that the site/business actually makes the items as oppose to just being a reseller? Does it make a difference if the site/business is run by people who are in the lifestyle? Lastly, how can a site/business promote that they are a good place to do business without coming across a phoney?

I've mentioned this on other threads. Try The Water-hole in Ct. for leather products. Mike, the owner, is a professional leathersmith who happens to be into bondage, so he quite an assortment. All handcrafted, and he backs them 100%. He will also do specialty items. His business caters to the horseman's indusrty. he makes saddles, and other related products, so it's an established business. Oh yeah, he's a nice guy too. Ho does have a website.

Interesting questions.

1. Yes, I am looking for basically the same thing whether it's a BDSM retailer or a vanilla retailer: quality for the price and reliable customer service. The only difference is that I'd be especially concerned about privacy when dealing with a BDSM business.

2. I think pictures are important, as long as they are not misleading. Some websites have pictures of girls with nice bare breasts, and those are fun to look at, but they don't really tell you much about the product you're interested in buying.

3. To me it doesn't matter much whether the site is a reseller, as long as the customer service is reliable. Some home businesses that produce their own merchandise have not, in my experience, been the most reliable after the purchase.

4. Same as 3: it doesn't matter to me whether the site is run by lifestylers or vanillas, although I assume that any site would have to have a lifestyler at least as a consultant. Otherwise I can't imagine them surviving.

5. That depends. To me, the best marketing is reliable service. Usually I have to wonder about really elaborate marketing schemes and glitzy websites with Czechoslovakian models, because it makes me think I'm not going to get the best price.

The site is http://www.water-hole.com/

I agree, Mike is Good People!

I'd also suggest a local kinky flea market, asking around at munches or play parties (hey, do you mind if I ask you where you got that fine-looking flogger?). Most everyone I know LOVES to talk about their toys. Sometimes, they will tell you even if you are just standing around gawking! (Sort of like bdsmer's and their toys...)

I don't know what part of the country you are in, but if you are anywhere close to San Francisco, I'd strongly recommend going to the Folsom Street fair in September, or Lady Thorn's Kinky Flea Market in April, August, and December.

I've purchased many wonderful floggers, whips, clamps, etc. directly from the manufacturer (the craftperson him/herself), or from people who are 'downsizing' their toy boxes. Fetish clothing is one of the hot items there as well.

There's nothing like touching and feeling the merchandise!

Would you recommend particular specialty retailers--say for floggers, paddles, whips etc ? It would be great to know of the "specialists" in the US as well as the "generalists".

This post has been really helpful thus far....New Zealand is surprisingly well served by dedicated enthusiasts but for that something special I have always had to look to the UK, Germany or the US.

cheers

These are people who have made some of the favorites in my toybag:

Floggers:

Happy Tails www.flogger.com
DeTails www.detailstoys.com

Paddles

Hanson Paddles www.hansonpaddle.com
London Tanners www.thelondontanners.com
The Toy Bag www.toybag.com

Whips

Really, it depends on the whip you want. If you want a basic signal whip (the kind most people call single tails), either Happy Tails for a 12 or 16 plait (above), or Morgan (www.davidmorgan.com) for a basic (and inexpensive) 8 plait. Happy Tails offers an interesting selection of variations as well - I have had a tomcat for years and it's always a favorite.

Want a really awesome signal whip or other single tail? Go to a fetish flea and handle them. I can't bring myself to recommend spending $400 on something that you haven't thrown yet.

www.desires.co.nz
www.dvice.co.nz
www.whisper.co.nz

for those under the Southern cross. The Aussies will have some fine nice stores too.

one place that is just awesome is Purple Passion/DV8 in NYC (purplepassion.com) they have a lot of great equipment from many different companies as well as local craftspersons, and JT's Stockroom (stockroom.com) I think I got my first vibrator from them when I was younger, and recently my latest whip! great stuff and great prices. all of them have great quality equipment.

I've been dealing with Purple Passion for a long time, and I continue to even after moving to Los Angeles. the store is great if you ever get a chance to get in there. It's like a candy store for deviants...!
