I don't know if anyone is interested if you are in the UK, but there is a documentry on tonight about the first British Soldier, Ian Hamilton, to undergo sexchange.
Now known as 'Jan', I have seen a few interviews with her, and she is very articulate and interesting, so although I can't 'recommend' the programme, it might be of interest to some people.
It is on Channel 4 at 9pm tonight.

I'm really not sure whether she would be the first?

There's an "urban legend" which does the rounds that soldiers from the elite regiments (Paras, Marines, SAS, SBS) as well as the rest of the army, have been changing sex for as long as its been possible to do so. Apparently, the elite regiments have the highest per capita rate for it - which could well be true since the likes of us do tend to try to prove we're "real men" and exorcise our demons through over compensation, which to the outside observer makes us (in that phase of denial at least) the "best of the best".

Still, it might be an interesting watch - although it will have to compete with Family Guy or South Park what with them pesky kids being here!

She was territorial parachute regiment might be the same one, after leaving Afghanistan went through reassignment.

I gave it as it is listed - first to have full reassignment - that is how it is advertised Lady E.  I never met her personally so I can't confirm, but seen many interviews with her before and find her story really interesting.

quote:

Ian Hamilton (43) is a Captain of the Parachute Regiment and one of the most highly decorated officers in the British Army. He has served in Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq. But in 2007 Ian became the first officer and the first paratrooper in the history of the Armed Forces to undergo a sex-change operation.

well the friend i mentioned that was in Afghanistan that went through this as well, did this way back in 2000 shortly after leaving the royal air force.i have talked with a few others form boards we were on and as Lady Ellen mentioned it is fairly common.  i remember one thing my friend told me after she talked with me about all of it and it was that she was actually intersexed and always felt that she(he back then) always had "prove being a man" and it tore her up a great deal until she found out what was really going on.now she lives a very happy life after gaining full retirement from Royal Service to racing a 2005 MG with liquid Nitrous.served in Ireland as well,Bosnia, and,Afghanistan.got retirement just a little before Iraq.

Dark - I wasnt doubting what you wrote - it is indeed listed that way; but its certain there have been many previous instances

Maybe the first the MOD will admit to?

Possibly.  I am not big on army rankings - 'Officer' may make the difference or 'paratrooper' and as I have read about her, she was still in the army when she began and then they 'sacked' her - maybe the others left the army first before starting reassignment?  I have no idea.  It could just be Channel 4 marketing hype!

I was going to record 'Ashes to Ashes' and watch, but my TV digital guide says it is on at 10pm?  I think they have snuck in a programme on shannon matthews.  So I am a bit confused what time it is on now.

Well, I watched it - it being bumped to 22hrs was a good thing!

It seems she is the first officer to transition, but thats by the by. What was amazing I thought, was that almost everything she said, everything she had been through (apart from the army stuff obviously), all the experiences, hopes and fears - could have been spoken by me in the same terms.

Which either makes the pair of us equally crazy (though one has to be crazy to transition - its not for the faint hearted or uncommitted) or equally genuine.

I also watched it Lady E - found the whole documentry completely fascinating and candid.  She was/is absolutely an inspiration.
I really hope many more people watched it because it showed just how commited one has to be and that it's not just as simple as 'changing sex' - in fact couldn't be more far from it.  I admit I sat in tears when she was in tears of upset and frustration explaining how she wasn't this or that, not a man, not a trans, not a freak just a woman trapped in the wrong body and how she just wanted to be loved and accepted on who she is, not was or had become.
