dollparts85 -> Rabbits are not Easter presents-Make mine chocolate! (3/20/2008 7:54:45 AM)

"Rabbits are a familiar symbol of the Easter holiday. In the days leading up to it, they appear on television commercials and packages of candy, and stores are filled with stuffed rabbits. It is no surprise that children beg their parents for a bunny of their own. Ill-prepared to care for these unique creatures, their "owners" often quickly tire of them. In the months following Easter, local humane societies and rabbit rescues are flooded with rabbits, former Easter gifts whose "owners" no longer want them. The unlucky ones are dumped outside where predators, cars, illness, and injury virtually guarantee an early death."

Sad Easter Bunny story:

"In the spring of 2006, Mr. Bunny was a tiny bundle of soft white fur with pretty pink eyes, and mom just had to have him as an Easter present for the kids. “It seemed like the thing to do,” that same mom explained as she surrendered him to the local animal shelter in the fall. Mr. Bunny had, in the meantime, grown into an 8.5-pound adult New Zealand who was a lot more work than she'd ever imagined. What's more, he didn't care to play with her kids and would nip when they poked at him. “What can I do?” she asked as she handed him over. “You can tell everyone you know exactly what you told me,” the shelter admissions counselor replied. “Tell them that if they wouldn't want the kind of commitment a dog would require, they shouldn't get a bunny, because having a bunny is just as demanding as having a dog.” Mr. Bunny has joined the all-too-many rabbits at the shelter, waiting and hoping for a loving, permanent home. And the kids have learned that animals are disposable.

Smiles of delight were the likely response when a beautiful, white rabbit was brought to her new home. We don't know this with absolute certainty but we do know that this same rabbit ended up dead at the age of 3 1/2 months. Given her age and the timeframe (three weeks after Easter), we are reasonably confident that she was an Easter rabbit.
She was found at the side of a road by a Columbus House Rabbit Society volunteer who immediately took her in for veterinary care. Her condition suggested that she had not been loose for very long but she clearly was in trouble. She was listless, unable to keep her head up, and her breathing was raspy.

The source of the problem soon became clear: A puncture wound in her neck caused by an outdoor or household predator. Regardless, the rabbit was abandoned outside by the same people who had assumed responsibilty for her care a few weeks earlier. Sadly, she died within hours of her rescue.

Please help us prevent this from happening to other rabbits. Spread the word: Easter's no fun for a real bun."

When I was a wee innocent sprout an auntie brought an adorable baby lamb over for us to play with. Sweet little creature, fluffy and big eyed it loved to be hugged. The next week we went over to aunties house for supper. She served up baby lamb roasted with carrots. True story.

I support this campaign. People can be cruelly shortsighted when it comes to issues like this.

Here's another plug for the House Rabbit Society:

I love the house rabbit society hehe When I got my first rabbit, I read everything I could on that site...so informative! I still go back there when I have any questions on my rabbits. [:)]

i had rabbits when i was young.   i was tought how to treat those rabbits, care for them and they all lived in cages in the barn. my grandparents also had rabbits i wasn't allowed to play with, those were food.   i hate when i see parents give rabbits as Easter gifts.  They aren't a novelty gift, that is what they make stuffed rabbits for.  i have heard the in some cities they have banned the adoption of black cats at halloween, i wish they did that at Easter with rabbits too.

All this talk of rabbits has made me die for a "civet de lapin aux pruneaux" - totally unkosher, but so deliciously wrong with Easter approaching [8D] .

fr

when we first moved onto our farm a cute lil rabbit "adopted" us (ie we couldn't get rid of her). Her name was Esther. Esther Bunny. (stop groaning...)

She was plump because she would raid our garden whenever the mood struck. I have no idea what happened to her. She was a lil character tho...She knew our cats never went outside so she would sit on the porch to piss them off.

That's actually quite cute. Now I feel guilty that I let my greed do the talking earlier.

Are people still selling chicks and baby ducks at Easter as well?

we live in a farming area and sadly...chicks, bunnies and ducks are sold to "city slickers" at Easter. Baby ducks and chicks are so dainty and easily killed by an over affectionate lil one. Plus (here's the kicker) they grow up. Alot of them are abandoned.

I grew up in suburbia and was given a chick for easter one year. Somehow I didn't kill that little chick and it was a boon companion for almost three years, a stray dog got it. I think my parents did regret getting me that chicken but didn't have the heart to get rid of it.

But I do see quite clearly that most easter chicks, ducks and rabbits are doomed to die an early death and that really bothers me.

I'm pretty sure my pet would object to me buying another chick.[;)]
