littleone35 -> Can't ask questions? (3/20/2008 12:38:25 PM)

I recently made a post. just something i am curious about  (very curious)  i never said it was MY situation just a situation some subs may find themselves in.  Why it is that some say things like if that was the situation why did you... (whatever).  Or you were wrong to ....

So people assume i am talking about my relationship???  We all know what assuming does ( makes and ass out of u n me).

So i was wondering can't a person ask a general knowledge question without being jumped on?

Because often when people ask questions it is about them.  I can see how people would make the connection.

DesFIP -> RE: Can't ask questions? (3/20/2008 1:00:08 PM)

It comes across as a general conversation question more if you mention what kicked it off in your head. If it was something in another topic, then give a link. If it was on tv, mention the show. But when someone says "I have a hypothetical question" or "My friend wants to know", then 9 times out of 10 it isn't hypothetical nor is it a friend, it is the poster who isn't admitting it.

Although I can see how irritating this is, freshman year in college my roommate mentioned she had been having unprotected sex with her high school boyfriend for over a year. I lost it at her total stupidity. She was afraid to go to the school health center and ask about contraception for fear they would call her parents. I volunteered to go ask them about their privacy rules and told the nurse that I was asking for a friend, of course the nurse didn't believe me. I got so pissed I finally said that I was on b.c. pills because I did have sense enough to go talk to my doctor before starting school.

AquaticSub -> RE: Can't ask questions? (3/20/2008 1:14:47 PM)

It happens. I made a post about something I was curious about (what couples do when they have collars or other jewelry that are glued/sautered or otherwise made so they *can't* be removed and the sub has to remove them) and some people thought Valyraen was saying I couldn't remove my ring (ordinary ring, in no way hard to remove) for a surgery. I did think that was silly. Sometimes people just miss information, can't be bothered to read the entire thing, or misunderstood what was being said. And, to be fair, sometimes people ask questions when they aren't willing to admit that it is really about them.

OmegaG -> RE: Can't ask questions? (3/20/2008 1:22:38 PM)

Especially with the topic you posted (if it's the one I think you are referring to), people have strong opinions and sometimes they can't get over their opinions or their quest to save the world from differing opinions to actually look at what's being written, how it's being written, who it's being written by and what that poster has said previously.

I know a person who feels so strongly against polymoury(sp) that she feels there should be a law against it, that any person who is in a committed relationship is found having sex with someone else should be convicted.  Besides the fact that it's absolutly unenforcable, I see her serial monogamy as being a varient of this practice, yet talking with her about different strokes for different folks falls on deaf ears, she is convinced that because she would be hurt if her (fourth) husband had sex with someone else that everyone else should feel the same way.

And yes, if she knew that I consentually entered a relationship where I know that my partner has other partners and is open and honest about it, she would feel the need to save me.

xxblushesxx -> RE: Can't ask questions? (3/20/2008 6:23:27 PM)

Because I usually don't ask a question unless it pertains to me or someone I know.

SirMIkeSD -> RE: Can't ask questions? (3/20/2008 6:38:31 PM)

Oh come on we all know it's you

Really if it's not you, just say so when you post and if people can't get a clue too bad for them.

Way back when I made a post about how people view switches and explained exactly how I feel about the issue and what I had done with it.

I still occasionally get emails and stuff saying "Hey don't sweat it!" even though it was painfully obvious to me that it wasn't a personal issue and I had it taken care of.

People like to personalize things and become sympathizers.  And half the time the person really is posting about themselves.

DiurnalVampire -> RE: Can't ask questions? (3/20/2008 7:42:24 PM)

A lot of times, too, people have used the "I am asking this for a friend" opening, or "This is a hypothetical situation, but I was wondering" to get information about a sitaution they are involved in but do not really want people to know they are involved in. Just like people wil buy something embarassing, and of course will make it a point of telling the cashier that they are shopping for a friend or family member. Sometimes the harder you try to make it apparent that the topis is NOT about you, the more it looks liek it really is and you are trying to be covert.

Just a guess

Poetryinpain -> RE: Can't ask questions? (3/20/2008 10:13:50 PM)

I would think that anyone who reads enough of your posts to get a feeling for who you are would learn to "read" which posts are truly about you and which are in fact hypothetical.

I think I understand the mind-set of asking hypothetical questions. I am a curious person (well, in both meanings of the word), and I have an imagination. Sometimes I see something in a thread that gets me thinking, "But, what if ... ?" And so I think about asking that question. Then I think that people will think it's really about me, and I don't ask.

Kudos to you for actually asking.

SimplyMichael -> RE: Can't ask questions? (3/21/2008 7:35:55 AM)

I would respond but it would require making assumptions.

TwistedLeather -> RE: Can't ask questions? (3/21/2008 5:02:58 PM)

Simply put... people like drama. (waits for those same people to jump on her for making this comment)

And don't feel bad, my curiosity gets the better of me sometimes too, and i'll ask questions that are so left field of who i am, or what situation i'm in. In my opinion, the only bad question is the one you leave unasked. But perhaps the others are right. When posting it, be clear in what brought you to this curiosity.

Curiosity doesn't always kill the cat!

'Me thinks thou doest protest too much'

I believe most people will assume (yes, I know, a terrible thing to do) that the post is about the OP unless a specific reference is used. Sometimes we are just one-track mammals.

And that in itself confirms what some people were thinking about her thread.

Kalista07 -> RE: Can't ask questions? (3/22/2008 10:29:09 AM)

Honestly? i think a big part of it has to do with arrogance. Seriously, i think some people enjoy hearing (seeing) their words spewed so much, that they can't be bothered to read the entire situation through. i think may people are just so sure that they have THE answer and they need to impart their wisdom on all of us, that they just can not be bothered with reading all of the facts or applying logic to one's post.

Look who responded and what they said on this thread.......  I think if you were really smart, it would tell you ALOT !!

Dnomyar -> RE: Can't ask questions? (3/24/2008 4:40:26 AM)

I used to post questions that I took from another post and wanted clarification on. For some reason I got bitched at about it. So I don't post anymore. I have enough trouble staying on here as it is now.

littlebitxxx -> RE: Can't ask questions? (3/24/2008 7:19:58 AM)

Yanno, with all the jumping to conclusions, running off at the mouth, diving off the deep end, carrying grudges and leaping down others' throats that goes on in our lives, ya gotta wonder why there is such an obesity problem.

littleone, in answer to your question:  it's what humans do best.
