dollparts85 -> Anyone ever have pet rats? (3/20/2008 8:28:40 PM)

I have two male dumbo rats that are brothers and share a cage...have all their life. (I've had them since they were about 3 weeks old...they're about maybe 9 months old now.) lately they have been fighting a lot. The one rat, Oreo, is a lot bigger than the other one. They always fight over food. They are both pretty large and over weight though so it's not like the other one is starving to death or anything LOL but the larger one, has been getting scabs on his neck from his brother bitting him. They squeak and roll around and stuff several times a day...they stop when I yell at them but then go right back at it. LOL Do you think it would be a good or bad idea for me to separate them? I know rats are very social animals and need companionship. I do not want them to get depressed or lonely. But I also do not want them to hurt each other.

I've never had rats, but I didn't think they were that social.  I know they congregate together, but I think that's just out of convenience.  I've been told they are cannibals.  I know a lot of people find them repulsive, but I have always admired them.  They are tough little survivors.  I saw a show about them once, and it was amazing what they are capable of doing.

hehe I've had rats pretty much all my life. At one point we had 12 [:)] I only have three now, the two dumbos and a hooded fancy. It is normal for them to play fight...but generally they do not leave scabs on each other. I'm sure it is normal in the wild for them to turn on each other when they are starving, but pet rats don't do that.

DesFIP -> RE: Anyone ever have pet rats? (3/20/2008 8:47:35 PM)

What kinds of toys or activities do they have? It's been so long since I had a pet rodent that I can't remember if rats like treadmills the way hamsters do. I would think they need something to engage them rather than just sit in a cage all day. They're meant to have a lot of exercise.

Lynnxz -> RE: Anyone ever have pet rats? (3/20/2008 8:50:12 PM)

Haha, We use rats in the haunted house. I think there were like 15ish of them, all just feeder rats, but they were cute.. smelly tho. I tried to wash them, but it was too hard to keep the clean ones seperate from the stinky ones. Bleh. Ratties.

Anyway, what we did was have a plexiglass wall that went right down the center of the cage.. it was a huge cage, one of the guys built little stairs and platforms in it and everything.  Maybe you could try that, to see if they do better serperated, but still in sight of each other.

dollparts85 -> RE: Anyone ever have pet rats? (3/20/2008 8:59:53 PM)

They have a large cage, it's a rabbit cage. A lot of room to run around. They love to climb the walls. They don't seem to be too fond of the toys I have bought them in the past (they just ended up peeing all over them...LOL) so they don't have any right now...besides an igloo which they sleep in. They have two floors and a ladder and all. And I get them out to play a lot.

dollparts85 -> RE: Anyone ever have pet rats? (3/20/2008 9:10:19 PM)

Do you guys think that if I were to save up and get one of those huge ferret cages that have like 6 floors or something...like the Ferret Nation cage...that they would not fight as often?

DiurnalVampire -> RE: Anyone ever have pet rats? (3/20/2008 9:15:27 PM)

Its a dominance thing. Like dogs, sometimes you just need to separate them and keep them that way to make sure they dont hurt one another. More space wont help if they are fighting to prove dominance, itll just give them more places to start fights. Rats do just fine on their own, they arent pack animals. As they get older, it isnt unusual for the males to fight. It would be worse if you had a female, but as is you might stil hav eto get them away from one another.

I don't get females anymore b/c they always get tumors :(

I did have a female last year that was hairless...no idea what happened...but my sister in law was playing with her one day and she sat her down and she just like fell over...and started gasping for air...and then died...I had only had her for a few months. I've had dozens of rats in my lifetime and that had never happened before. They generally live at least two years.

Lynnxz -> RE: Anyone ever have pet rats? (3/20/2008 9:28:21 PM)

Apparently it's a product of inbreeding. :-/ Our poor little feeder rats kept getting abcesses everywhere.

BeachMystress -> RE: Anyone ever have pet rats? (3/21/2008 1:50:21 AM)

Is it perhaps a sexual/territorial thing? Has he hit some stage in his life that is causing a hormone imbalance? One of our cats just hit three and he's turned into a territorially aggressive lil shit. Yes, he is neutered but he has started bullying the other male cats and "slap fights" have become a daily routine. I'm giving him another month to grow out of it then we're gonna get some feliway again!  I'd take the rats to the vet to be sure both were healthy. Perhaps the aggressive one would benefit from being neutered. I have heard that aggressive behaviour can be inherited in rats. I went and found an article on it for you.. http://www.rmca.org/Articles/aggres.htm

I'd also give them more room. Perhaps two rabbit cages with a connecting tunnel that could be closed off at times? They don't need to socialize constantly and I'm sure the one being bitten would appreciate some "safe" sleep time.

When my children were growing up we always lived in rentals which didn't allow large pets.  So, we tried lots of the little kinds of pets.  Hampsters first, but their sight isn't good and they're nocturnal and will drive you nuts with the digging they do at night in their cages.  Then mice, but they're soooo small it's difficult to establish a good relationship with them, and they always wind up biting because you scare them....

But the rats we tried were wonderful and they turned out to be good lil pets.  However, we only got the females because the males were always toooo aggressive.  We had 4 over the years, and i loved the little things to pieces.  Nothing sweeter than to pull a tiny lil creature out of it's cage and have it play with you on the couch or on the bed.  One lil female we had would play tag, and kinda sorta "wrestle" with your fingers.....her name was Scamper, and she was the first rat we got.  When she died we took her down to the desert with us and buried her in a steel box at the Stone House, which was near the sand dam.  Anyway, i digress.....

i would bet anything that your males have hit puberty and the testosterone is flowing a mile a minute, which most likely is the cause of all this aggressive behavior.  Just my opinion, but i'd separate them into their own cages.  Or divide the cage they have into two separate sections....

The females are probably getting tumors because of inbreeding.  More and more people are buying snakes, the constrictors, which need rats for food, which in turn means there is a need for more "feeder" mice and rats.  Consequently, the quality of the rats is most likely suffering because of the need for fast breeding turnaround.

i hope this helps, and the next rat you get, try a female from a different shop than the one where you got your female that developed tumors.  Also a different shop from where you got the hairless rat.  The breeders that they are buying from are spitting out feeder rats so fast, they are mutating at a fast rate of speed.

By the way, if you ever get a rat that bites, this is an uncorrectable problem and it needs to be returned to the shop where you purchased it.

Good luck, and enjoy these little creatures......they truly are lots of fun......

dollparts85 -> RE: Anyone ever have pet rats? (3/21/2008 7:05:10 AM)

That's not true. A little love and care can turn a "mean" rat into a nice one. [:)]

And rats hit "puberty" at like 4 weeks LOL

All female rats are prone to tumors. Less prone if you get them fixed....it's a form of breast cancer.

RCdc -> RE: Anyone ever have pet rats? (3/21/2008 7:22:56 AM)

Rats are social animals.  Always keep them in pairs, usually siblings or from birth.  Fighting and scrapping is what they do.  They like to rough and tumble, but it could just be that you have one rat a lot rougher than the other.  Just make sure the marks and bites are kept clean so they don;t get infected.  Only seperate them if it becomes life threatening. During 'adolecence' male rats get feisty but after they are about a year, that should subside - so if they are 9months that would make sense.  The best way to calm rats is having them castrated - that would solve it, but its a cost and its risky because they are so small.

Don't EVER use a wheel or tread mill as someone suggested with rats, mice, degus or gerbils.  These are really dangerous because of the risk of getting tails caught in the mechanism.  It's a horrible sight to see a tailed creature damaged because it got caught in the spokes or tangled in the open bars.

dollparts85 -> RE: Anyone ever have pet rats? (3/21/2008 7:25:54 AM)

I know about not using wheels and such. They wouldn't do it anyways cuz they're lazy bums [:)] hehe they do make large plastic wheels without wires for rats...but my rats are like a good 4 times the size of a normal rat LOL

RCdc -> RE: Anyone ever have pet rats? (3/21/2008 7:29:28 AM)

Yeah, we had a solid wheel for our gerbils once, and they NEVER used it.  Well apart from running on the top of it rather than inside and THEN falling off when they over span.[:D]

LOL yeah...I had gerbils as a kid and they did that as well LOL had hamsters too...pretty funny when we had baby hamsters and the momma would run in the wheel really fast and the babies would climb in and then go flying out! LOL they always seemed to be okay though.

I would amend this to say, don't ever use wire wheels, but there are wheels that are fine for and pose no danger at all.  You can see a few of the different designs here.  In the past, I have used both Wodent Wheels and ones similar to Leo Braun's made from the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket.  My ratgirls loved them both and never had any problems.
