Estring -> RE: March Madness Support Group Meets Here (3/22/2008 7:19:50 PM)

Whew, what a game. Stanford wins in overtime! Washington State wins as well. Now let's hope UCLA does the same. As you can tell, I am a PAC 10 fan all the way.

Hoya saxa!

What in the hell is a "hoya", anyway?

dcnovice -> RE: March Madness Support Group Meets Here (3/22/2008 7:50:58 PM)

Sigh . . .

Decades ago, dear old Mother Georgetown had a team (football, I think) called the Stonewalls or the Stonewallers. The classically minded students would cheer them on by yelling Hoya saxa, which means "What rocks!" in Greek (hoya) and Latin (saxa). Somehow the name Hoya stuck.

That's what they told us at orientation, anyway.

Because the mascot was origianlly "Stubby" the Terrier, who fought in France then performed at the Univ. half-time shows.  Later, students began bringing pet bulldogs to games when the Univ. was part of a movement to ban football as un-academic.  So they drew a cartoon bulldog and named him Jack.  Later they got a real bulldog as a mascot again and he was called Jack.  Georgetown always had a real dog as a mascot, except between 51 and 99.

Hey!

You forgot to Hail James Naismith and Hail Phog Allen!

And seriously. . . I have been around March Madness. . . One year I even went to that ESPN Bar in Washington D.C. and watched a game.

Now, I find that www.espn.com works just as well for letting me know how my team is doing.

But, even if I do not do that, I KNOW when the Jayhawks win.  There is much honking of horn, screaming of people, and setting off of fireworks.

If there is NO blood spilled. . . I just do not care.

That is why Hockey is soooo great.  The way the blood bounces on the ice.
