Straight from Barack Obama's Obama'08 Website:
quote:

Barack Obama's Plan Judgment You Can Trust As a candidate for the United States Senate in 2002, Obama put his political career on the line to oppose going to war in Iraq, and warned of “an occupation of undetermined length, with undetermined costs, and undetermined consequences.” Obama has been a consistent, principled and vocal opponent of the war in Iraq.

In 2002, Barack Obama was running for re-election to the Illinois State Senate.  The US Senator from Illinois running for election in 2002 was Dick Durbin.

Not only has Ron Paul been consistant and vocal against the war in iraq he voted agaisnt it in congress and also voted against the patriot act.  Always voted for a balanced budget etc etc etc.

I like Ron Paul.  I hope he takes the Libertarian nomination for President (he's been their candidate before).

However, my point in the OP is that Obama flat out lies to make himself appear more....something.  And foolishly so--he did speak out against the Iraqi conflict in 2002.  That much is a matter of public record.

To quote the candidate himself, "words do matter".

Politicians, in general and worldwide, conveniently forget highly relevant points. It`s the same here in the UK. In light of your post on Obama, here is a little speech from his rival.

Polite: I think that video has really caught her out.
Saddam was bad enough, Sodem was unbearable.

The Tory party in the UK are just as bad. Who would believe that they voted for the War ?

Interestingly enough, the statements themselves are not necessarily in conflict.  Had the intelligence reports and estimates on Saddam Hussein's presumed stockpiles of biological and chemical agents been accurate, we very likely would have a different view of the war today.

I do think Clinton is being more than a little disinegenuous in portraying Operation Iraqi Freedom as being entirely a Dubya Debacle--the Democrats in Congress were and are complicit in the entire mess (a fact John Kerry could never get away from no matter how hard he tried).

A simple "we fucked up" from Clinton or McCain would be nice.  I'm not holding my breath, though....

Exactly Celticlord, anyone, either side of the Atlantic, saying we got it wrong and this is what we will now do, would be very much appreciated.

No he wasn't a candidate for US Senate in 2002, so far as I am aware.  Dick Durbin was the candidate for the US seat.
Please reread, CuriousLord.  He was running for another term in the Illinois State Senate.  The website, it would appear, states that he was a candidate for the US Sentate.

He was not a US Sentaor, nor was he running for a seat in the US Senate when this was all happening.  Therefore, his website information is incorrect and misleading.  Is it a big deal?  Seems like a pretty glaring error that should have been caught.  Stating the information correctly should not detract from Obama.  Stating it incorrectly, however, could be read as an attempt to attract support via false information.
He had a stance, most certainly, that most agree with now.  However, it is not correct to state that he was a candidate for something when he was not.

Per the OP:
quote:

My apologies if I have the facts wrong here.

CuriousLord -> RE: Credibility (3/22/2008 8:46:29 PM)

Ohh I see.  US Senate versus the state senate.  Yup, I misread.
