I don't often buy books these days... but frequently guests at my hotel leave them behind...

so I have to say .. the HArlequin romances.  I read them, because there's nothing else.. but OH MY GOD!! [:'(]

Many of these romance novels are generated by a computer program [:D] .

Jane Aire (sp?) and The Diary of Anne Frank.  Oh, and As I Lay Dying.  Basically anything I read in gradeschool English classes, really, with the strong exception of Card's Ender's Game series- which I loved.

I'm rather ill read when it comes to fictions, so I mostly could only tell you about text books I hated.  =/

I think As I Lay Dying's title was chosen with empathy for the reader in mind.

I can honestly say "none" because I don't buy a whole lot of books.  We have such a great library system here that anything I can think of I can either borrow from it or get it through an interlibrary loan and none of that costs anything.

When I do go to a bookstore and buy some (which I did just a short while back), I am so selective and take lots of time reading through them beforehand, that I'm almost guaranteed not to get a dud[:)].  I think alot of that has to do with the fact that I don't read much fiction.  It's much easier to tell what you're getting with nonfiction as you can browse the table of contents, index, photos, etc.  With fiction, you've got to really read it to know what's inside.  Hard to do that before you buy.  More chance of getting a stinker[8D].............luci

I love Jane Eyre. As far as Anne Frank, it isn't a piece of fiction, it's reality and brings home the horror of her life. Standard reading to introduce ums to Holocaust studies. Followed by Wiesel's Night which should never be read by an um after dark.

In the late 1920's, a Russian by the name of Vladamir Propp published a book called Morphology of the Folktale in which creates a catalogue of characters, their functions, and plot elements. It is basically a schema for generating Russian fairy tales. There have been many computer programs that implement this and are capable of generating new tales.

In reality, you could probably do this with Harlequins, but you'd still need a writer to smooth it out. About 15 years ago, I thought maybe I could knock some off, so I got the guidelines (you just ask them) for what was required for each of their lines. It is very formulaic, but one thing that they stress throughout is that the most successful Harlequins are written by the people that love them. I couldn't bring myself to read one, and certainly never got around to writing one.

Only once in my  life have I ever been unable to finish a book. That is partly due to selecting things that I want to read, but one time I was interested in a woman whose favourtie author was Philip Roth. It was one of the salient ones, but I just couldn't get into it. Call me a beast or a heretic, but there's just too much other stuff out there.

I cant think of any that I really hated, Lord of the Flies was a bit of a let down and Wuthering Heights didnt really grab me till two thirds of the way in, Oh one that I keep starting but dont seem to be able to get into is Love in the Time of Cholera, I am going to try that again soon actually I think.
