No, its not about what you thought it was!

I was wondering whilst I drove back from Birmingham this afternoon, about all these posts we put on CM, and just how long they will be around on the internet?

Will it be possible, for instance, for my great grandkids in 2075 to find out all about what sort of a nutter their great granny was back in 2008, by searching my posts?

Or is there some limiting factor to how long my posts will be around for, assuming that CM is still going strong in 2075? And obviously, barring the forthcoming end of the world as predicted from time to time?

Is there somewhere an internet bin, where old stuff gets sent to, or are our posts around forever?

E

I'm pretty sure my kids and grandkids will have figured out long before they ever discover CM that something wasn't quite right with their darling mother/grandma...

Same here!

But I'm interested, in that we grew up in an age when we might be lucky enough to read our grandparents' diaries when they'd passed, and thereby gain an insight into who they were as people. But a diary is only a small snapshot and doesnt generally range over many types of subject matter.

With all the subjects we post on here (and indeed on all the other similar forum board sites on the net - not me personally of course, since CM is the best one!), there is a much wider range of subjects than any diary could cover, and so our posts are therefore far more revealing about who we are.

For future generations, assuming they knew or could deduce who our IDs really are, all these posts would represent an enormous source of information on us, their ancestors. Far more than any diary or collection of diaries might offer.

I should emphasise though, I'm referring mainly to the stuff posted in Off Topic with this!

Somewhere in a dark, cavernous, abandoned government building,
all of our files and posts are kept in a huge data base.
Don't say you were not warned!

Gosh I certainly hope not, I would dread to look as far back as the type of things I was saying last year, I used to keep a diary, and if I had a break from it and then went back the first thing I would do was read all the pages roll my eyes at all the drama and then tear them out. I would hate to think that people would read back and see how thick and nieave I was (and Im sure I will be thinking the same of me now in a years time)

I can certainly see the potential for embarassment and dismay - but then the way we change our thoughts and ways over time is interesting too. I have my diaries from a few years back when I was at that "crunch" stage, knowing I would have to either change or die, and its both saddening to read and amazingly interesting, even in German (I kept my diaries in German for privacy!)
