Status: offline 		Last weekend I made the switch; no more plastic bags for me!

My switch was prompted by seeing some really good linen shopping bags on sale at a local store, for just 80p each (about US$1-60). I bought five.

But it was also prompted by opening my cupboard and finding literally dozens of used plastic bags from the supermarket and various shops - disposable ones in that thin plastic. Useful from time to time to have, for lining the paper bin, cleaning out the cats' litter tray and emergency bag needs, but really only ever used twice at maximum, and the rate of such use never exceeding the rate of arrival of more plastic bags!

When it occurred to me that I'd never use all the bags I had accumulated, and that even taking them back to the store to use again was unlikely (theyre very flimsy), and that if I took them to the recycling at the store it would only encourage the stores to keep handing new ones out, the time was ripe for a change!

And now I not only get more space in my cupboard, but I also have this sense of environmentally responsible superiority! The weather forecast is not yet predicting smug, but its only a matter of time.

So, what are your thoughts on the ubiquitous disposable plastic carrier bag?

Status: offline 		hello Lady E... I actually made the switch to linen bags for my grocery shopping.  But seems that I keep every bag of every purchase I make.  I have millions lol.

Status: offline 		i use paper bags when i'm given the choice, most grocery stores around here still offer that.  there are a few like walmart that don't give a choice so i use plastic then.  i re-use both paper and plastic bags for other things when i can.

Status: offline 		When I lived in cardiff I always used a rucksack for shopping, I would occasionally get a plastic bag to use as a binline in my wastepaper bin, since I have been back home I seem to have accumulated loads of bags because my family dont really bother with the rucksack thing, I still use them to line my bin but dont reuse them at the shops, actually think I better start doing that again

Status: offline 		I use a plastic bag on roadtrips as a time-travel face bag. it allows me to travel through time at the speed of regular time.... with a plastic bag...

Status: offline 		Stores would prefer to use plastic around here.  Even when they have recycling bins for the bags..many do not recycle them. 
Around here, we don't even have the choice of recycling them.  Or acting as if we want to.
It depends on what I am doing.  If I'm planting something I use paper bags.  If I have a lot of groceries at the moment I opt for plastic.  You can carry 150 pounds of groceries in the house in one trip...which is a great plus to me.  My first apaprtment was on the second floor...my carport was a good 1/4 mile away.  I learned to carry heavy stuff long distances and in as few trips as possible.
Anyway I use the paper as a temporary weed barrier. 
Linen is nice but they need to make larger stronger linen bags.

Status: offline 		Shocking report on last night's BBC news about plastic products in the sea - and how because of ocean currents, they end up washed on the beach at Midway Island. They filmed 30 minutes of clean up, in which time on a short stretch of beach they accumulated a pile about the size of a family car.

The plastics cause other problems than just an eyesore though - the Albatros population on the island is being killed by them.
